Joliet Slammers News Release

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-put together a good all around game in defeating Schaumburg 5-0 on the road, Tuesday.

Joliet scored the first run of the day in the 3rd inning on a 2-out RBI single from Max Casper. That hit scored Tyler Roberts, who had doubled. Slammers starter Blair Walters retired the first six batters before an error started the 3rd inning. After a single, Joliet catcher Tyler Roberts picked off the lead runner at 3rd base. That was followed by a double play to end the threat. The Slammers made it a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning. Chris Epps singled and Russell Moldenhauer dropped down a surprise bunt for a single. After a wild pitch, Grant DeBruin lofted a deep fly ball to right field that drove in the run on a RBI sac fly.

Walters was very effective, allowing just three hits through the first five innings while striking out one and walking none. He recorded nine ground ball outs in that stretch while facing just one over the minimum.

The Slammers added two more in the 6th on an RBI single from Adam Giacalone and run-scoring grounder from Marquis Riley to make the score 4-0. Walters then got into and the out of another jam as the Boomers loaded the bases in the 6th with a single, walk and hit batter. Walters then struck out the next two bases to keep the score at 4-0. He finished with 7 innings worked and no runs allowed on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Walters has been the Slammers best starting pitcher and finally has a win to show for it. Brett Zawacki finished off the game with two more shutout innings of work to make it 21 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work as a Slammer in 2014.
