Florence Y'alls News Release
(Sauget, IL) - The Gateway Grizzlies (29-13) came back from one-run down in the ninth on a Michael Wing RBI double and won the game in the 11th on a walk-off hit by pitch to defeat the Florence Freedom (17-21) by a final score of 3-2 Tuesday night.
Gateway got on the board first thanks to a Niko Vasquez solo home run in the fourth.
That was the only run Freedom starter Peter Gehle allowed as he went six and two thirds innings, scattering six hits, and striking out four.
Meanwhile the Freedom did not record a hit against Gateway starter Tucker Jensen until the sixth. With one away, Michael Wilson singled to left. Cole Miles followed with a walk. After Wilson advanced to third on a fly-out, Sam Eberle delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to tie the game at one. Ben Kline followed with a RBI single of his own and the Freedom led 2-1.
It would remain that way until the bottom of the ninth. Vasquez walked to start the inning against Jorge Marban. A ground-out moved him to second and after the Grizzlies pinch-ran with Tommy Richards, Wing delivered his double to tie the game. Marban worked out of the remainder of the inning without any further damage.
In the bottom of the 11th, Kale Kiser led-off with a double off Ed Kohout (0-2). Richards bunted Kiser to third and the Freedom elected to intentionally walk the next two batters to set up a play at any base. Chris Cummins entered the game and got two strikes on Richard Seigel. But his next pitch hit Seigel, forcing in a run and ending the game.
The Freedom will look to even the series Wednesday night as they send LHP Dave Middendorf (2-3, 3.71 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. eastern time and the game can be heard on allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
