SAUGET, Ill. - Florence Freedom relief pitcher Chris Cummins hit Richard Seigel on an 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded in the 11th inning and the Gateway Grizzlies collected a 3-2 walk-off win Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark.
Kale Kiser led off the 11th inning with a double, Tommy Richards moved Kiser to third base on a bunt and Florence (17-21) issued two straight intentional walks before Seigel brought in the game winning run on a hit-by-pitch.
The win gave the Grizzlies (28-13) their eighth straight win and their 11th in their last 12 home games. Gateway improved to a league-best 20-4 at home and maintained their four-game lead in the West Division over River City.
A Niko Vasquez solo home run in the fourth inning gave Gateway a 1-0 advantage and they kept that lead all the way until the sixth inning.
Vasquez smashed his sixth home run in his last five games.
Gateway starting pitcher Tucker Jensen didn't allow a hit in the first fiving innings of his start, but ran into trouble in the sixth inning. Sam Eberle and Ben Kline picked up back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the sixth to give Florence a 2-1 lead.
Jensen picked up a no-decision, allowing just two runs on three hits in six innings. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out six batters and walked three.
Vasquez led off the ninth inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a Landon Hernandez groundout to shortstop. Richards pinch-ran for Vasquez and scored on a one-out RBI double from Michael Wing to send the game to extra innings.
Wing finished 3-for-4.
Richard Barrett (1-1) was the winning pitcher after firing a perfect 11th inning to lower his ERA to 1.06.
The Grizzlies continue their five-game homestand at GCS Ballpark on Wednesday night. Right-hander Ja'Vaun West (5-1) will make the start for the Grizzlies against the Freedom. First pitch is set for 7:05.
