Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - Brandon Hicks had three RBI's including a two-run home run, helping the River Cats beat the Tacoma Rainiers on Friday night at Raley Field.
Grant Green and Daric Barton had back-to-back doubles in the home half of the first inning, leading to the first run of the game for the River Cats. However, the Rainiers quickly retaliated, plating a run of their own in the top half of the second inning on an RBI-double by Jesuit High School-product Vinnie Catricala to tie the score at one.
Sacramento regained the lead in the bottom of the second on Hicks' two-run shot to left-center field, putting Sacramento up by two runs, 3-1. After no runs were scored by either team in the third inning, Tacoma narrowed the deficit to one run, 3-2, in the top of the fourth on a Mike Wilson homerun. The River Cats struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs, one coming via a homerun off the bat of Barton.
Graham Godfrey got the start and threw for seven and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on nine hits. Godfrey (6-0) had three strikeouts in his sixth win of the season. For Tacoma, Jeff Marquez started and pitched for five innings, allowing five runs, all of which were earned, on nine hits. Marquez was tagged with the loss, dropping his record to 4-8 on the season.
Hicks finished 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. Barton contributed two hits, two RBI's and a run scored in the victory.
Steven Hensley made his Triple-A debut, relieving Marquez in the top of the sixth inning. Hensley tossed three innings of scoreless ball, striking out three River Cats.
The River Cats and Rainiers will play game three of the four-game series tomorrow, featuring Bruce Billings (3-0, 2.94 ERA) on the mound for Sacramento and Blake Beaven (0-0, No ERA) for Tacoma. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., but not before the River Cats pay tribute to Jimmy Buffet in the second annual Raley Field Fin Fest. There will be a pregame block party from 4-6:30 p.m. and the players will be wearing special Hawaiian-style jerseys that will be auctioned off with net proceeds going to the River Cats Foundation.
