Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA -The Cubs lost their season-high sixth straight game with a 9-1 loss to the Isotopes Saturday night at Principal Park. Chris Rusin struggled against Albuquerque (40-30), tossing 3.1 innings surrendering a season-high eight runs on nine hits while fanning four. Despite knocking eleven hits, Iowa (29-41) scored just one run and has reached a season-low of 12 games under .500.
The Isotopes jumped on Rusin, despite bookend strikeouts for the southpaw in the first. Albuquerque strung together four straight hits, two singles and two doubles to plate three first-inning runs. Albuquerque tacked on two more doubles and a sacrifice fly in the second inning to plate two more runs and increase their lead to five.
Iowa doubled the fun in their half of the second inning with Josh Vitters (4-for-4) and Brett Jackson knocking back-to-back two baggers to put Iowa on the board. In his first game back from the disable list, Blake DeWitt ripped the game's seventh double with two down in the third inning.
Josh Fields knocked Albuquerque's fifth double of the night in the third to drive in their sixth run and chase Chris Rusin out of the game with one out. Jay Jackson allowed both inherited runners to score on Josh Fields' league-leading 27th double of the season, and second of the night, and a sacrifice fly.
Anthony Rizzo led off the fourth with a bloop double the other way. Vitters followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but the Cubs failed to plate a run with nobody out in the inning. Isotope pitchers did not walk any Cubs, with John Ely picking up his seventh win of the season.
Jay Jackson was effective in 3.2 innings of long relief for Iowa surrendering one run on an Alex Castellanos solo shot in the seventh while fanning five. Castellanos was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Jeff Beliveau and Ryan Rowland-Smith combined to toss two scoreless innings of relief. Rusin suffered the loss.
Iowa will finish their 13-game home stand tomorrow with a 1:05 p.m. start for Fathers' Day at Principal Park. RHP Chris Volstad will toe the rubber for Iowa looking to avoid their second straight sweep at home facing off against LHP Michael Antonini (1-5). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 11:45 a.m.
