River Cats' luck runs out in Las Vegas

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (11-13) came up short in their first matchup this season with the Las Vegas 51s (10-15) by a score of 9-5. Right-hander Tyler Beede had a tough night, beginning with two home runs and four earned runs in the first inning.

Beede was able to strikeout six batters on the evening, but Las Vegas seemed to have Beede's number scoring four runs in the first inning, two in the third, and two in the fifth. The Giants prospect went 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and a season-high five walks.

The River Cats did put up a fight late in the game, however. Sacramento tallied twelve hits with big nights from Orlando Calixte and Hunter Pence. Calixte went three-for-four with two runs and two RBI while Pence added two hits and scored twice. Kyle Jensen had two hits and Chase d'Arnaud went three-for-five. d'Arnaud tripled in the sixth inning and later scored on a wild pitch.

The River Cats have a quick turnaround as they take on the Las Vegas 51s in game two of this four-game series with a Tuesday matinee. Left-hander Matt Gage (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the season for Sacramento, facing fellow lefty P.J. Conlon (1-1, 6.63). First pitch Tuesday morning will be at 10:35 a.m. (PT). Additional Notes

- Orlando Calixte posted his first three-hit game of the season and now has five hits and five RBI in his last two games.

- Eury Perez threw out a runner at home in the first inning to halt an early rally. He now has three outfield assists in just six games played with Sacramento.

- Despite pitching in a deficit, relief pitchers Dillon McNamara and Madison Younginer kept the River Cats in the game, combining for five strikeouts and one earned run over 3.1 innings pitched.
