New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Baby Cakes are starting to show a flair for the dramatic.

Jon Rodriguez ripped a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying the 'Cakes to a 4-3 win over the Round Rock Express for their second walk-off win in a row.

Dating back to last August, each of the Baby Cakes' last three victories over Round Rock have come via walk-offs.

In a reversal of Monday's script, the 'Cakes squandered a late 2-0 lead. Rodriguez had put New Orleans on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, then scored on a single by Austin Dean. The Baby Cakes nursed the lead all the way until the eighth, thanks to a dominating Triple-A debut by Trevor Richards.

Sent down by the Marlins last week after striking out 10 Dodgers in a start in Los Angeles, Richards fanned nine on Tuesday night and blanked the Express on three hits through seven innings, retiring 11 in a row at one point.

But Round Rock finally broke through in the eighth when former New Orleans All-Star Destin Hood led off with a double and scored one out later on a Hanser Alberto single. Richards was replaced by Severino Gonzalez, who gave up a two-out game-tying single to Willie Calhoun to deal the Baby Cakes their sixth blown save of the year.

Cameron Rupp took Gonzalez deep to lead off the ninth to give Round Rock its first lead, which proved to be short-lived.

Chad Wallach dumped a leadoff single into center field in the bottom of the ninth, and last night's hero, Eric Campbell, sent a broken bat single into left. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Rafael Ortega before Rodriguez bounced a single past a diving Alberto at shortstop to score the tying and winning runs for his third hit of the night.

Gonzalez (2-1) was credited with the victory despite the blown save, and Matt Bush (0-1) took the loss as the Baby Cakes improved to 9-4 at home.

The teams continue the series in a Wednesday matinee, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
