Round Rock Express News Release
METAIRIE, Louisiana - For the second night in a row, the New Orleans Baby Cakes (11-14) picked up a wild walkoff victory over the Round Rock Express (9-17), this time by a final score of 4-3. 'Cakes 1B Jon Rodriguez played the role of hero, driving in a pair of runs with a clutch single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
E-Train RHP Matt Bush (0-1, 7.71) suffered the loss after giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in 1.1 total innings of relief. New Orleans reliever RHP Severino Gonzalez (2-1, 3.45) picked up the win despite surrendering a run on two hits in 1.2 innings.
Much like last night, each starting pitcher dominated their outing. Express RHP Yovani Gallardo limited the Baby Cakes to two runs on four hits while striking out seven in 5.0 innings. In his first career Triple-A game after recently being optioned from the Miami Marlins, RHP Trevor Richards held Round Rock to two runs on six hits while tallying nine punchouts in 7.1 frames.
After four scoreless innings, New Orleans jumped aboard in the fifth. RF Rafael Ortega singled before Rodriguez doubled home the first run of the game. LF Austin Dean then doubled his team's lead with an RBI single.
Round Rock mounted a comeback in the eighth. Former New Orleans and current Round Rock RF Destin Hood led off the inning with a double, then SS Hanser Alberto singled to put the Express on the board. 2B Christian Lopes leveled the contest at 2-2 with an RBI single in the next at-bat.
The E-Train grabbed a brief lead in the top of the ninth inning as C Cameron Rupp tallied his third home run in his last four games, a solo shot off Gonzalez that put Round Rock up 3-2.
However, New Orleans C Chad Wallach and 3B Eric Campbell opened the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles. Following an Ortega sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position, Rodriguez singled to left field, plating a pair of runs to give his team a dramatic 4-3 comeback win.
Round Rock and New Orleans meet again on Wednesday afternoon. Express RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-3, 5.06) is scheduled to face Baby Cakes LHP Adam Conley (1-3, 8.84). First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
