Sacramento River Cats News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sacramento trailed 3-0 after three innings, but exploded for 12 runs over the next three frames to beat the Colorado Spring Sky Sox by a score of 12-4 on Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field.
The Sox scored once in the bottom of the first when Ben Paulsen brought Tim Wheeler home with a sacrifice fly to center field. They extended their lead to three in the following inning, scoring twice with two outs. The River Cats offense then came alive, scoring three times in the fourth, three in the fifth, and six in the sixth when they brought 13 batters to the plate with the help of four Sky Sox errors.
The Springs scored one final run in the fifth inning, but the River Cats bullpen-represented by Chris Resop and Kyler Newby-shut out the Sox for three innings to close out Sacramento's 12-4 victory, securing a 3-games-to-2 series victory for the Cats.
Michael Taylor went 3-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a walk, while Michael Choice and Anthony Aliotti each went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Daric Barton exited the game in the third, Jake Goebbert entered the game, finishing 2-for-5 with three runs off the bench.
The win was credited to Carlos Hernandez, who gave up four runs-two earned-on nine hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Resop struck out two in two scoreless innings, while Newby permitted just one hit in one scoreless frame with two strikeouts of his own.
The loss was charged to Collin McHugh, who gave up six runs-all earned-on eight hits and two walks in 4.1 innings of work. Steven Hensley allowed six unearned runs in 1.1 innings of work on four hits and two walks. Wheeler-a graduate of Sacramento State University-went 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a double.
The River Cats now return to Raley Field to open their final home series against the Fresno Grizzlies-the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The series will begin on Throwback Monday with Bruce Billings (13-6, 4.21 ERA) starting opposite righty Daryl Maday (0-1, 7.27 ERA), culminating in Fan Appreciation Day on Thursday, Aug. 29.
