Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - In front of a sellout crowd of 9,023, the Omaha Storm Chasers (66-69) fell in ten innings to the New Orleans Zephyrs (68-67) by a score of 4-3, snapping a streak of five straight extra-inning wins. Omaha did maintain their 2.0-game advantage in the American Conference North with Memphis losing again in Iowa, and the magic number for a third straight division title is down to eight with nine games left.
The score stood at 3-3 entering the tenth inning, when reliever Everett Teaford issued a leadoff walk to Zephyrs centerfielder Kevin Mattison. Teaford then recorded two outs and had former Storm Chaser Kevin Kouzmanoff down to his final strike, but the former teammate of Teaford singled through the hole at shortstop to bring around Mattison who moved into scoring position on a stolen base. Kouzmanoff drove in two runs on the night, and has hit .375 (12-for-32) against his former team this season.
Royals number three prospect Yordano Ventura made his 14th appearance for the Storm Chasers on the night, and the young flamethrower tossed six innings allowing three runs while striking out six for his third quality start at the Triple-A level. Ventura has not allowed more than three runs in a start since July 2, a span of eight starts, and during that stretch he has struck out 49 in 42.0 innings. For the entire season at Double-A and Triple-A, the 22-year-old has given up three runs or less in 21 of his 25 outings.
Omaha catcher Brett Hayes continued to victimize his former team with another long ball on the night, a two-run shot that gave the Chasers a 3-2 edge in the fourth inning before New Orleans tied it in the sixth in Ventura's final inning. With the homer Hayes had strung together three straight official at-bats with a long ball and has five in the series, the most for any Omaha player since Mike Moustakas totaled five in the last series at Rosenblatt Stadium on August 30 - September 2 of the 2010 season. Hayes leads the team with 16 home runs.
The 4-3 defeat clinches the first series loss to the Zephyrs at Werner Park in six total series. Omaha will look to keep chipping away at their magic number as they send out left-hander John Lamb (0-2, 6.55) against New Orleans right-hander Sam Dyson (1-2, 1.50) with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m.
