Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Las Vegas, Nv.--Las Vegas 51s (76-57) right-handed starter Matt Fox (7-4) pitched a season-high seven innings, and struck out nine, also a season-high en route to a 2-1 win over the Fresno Grizzlies (63-71). With the win, Las Vegas first place lead over the Sacramento River Cats is now at three games in the Pacific Coast League's Pacific Southern Division.
All the scoring was done early. Fresno took the lead 1-0 in the top of the second inning when third baseman Chris Dominguez singled to lead off, and that was followed by an RBI double to center by right fielder Juan Perez.
Las Vegas scored twice in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Brian Bixler led off with a double to left. Then Fox on a sacrifice attempt bunted out in front of the mound, Fresno right-handed pitcher Austin Fleet took his chance trying to throw Bixler out at third but on the tag play he was safe, and that placed runners at the corners with nobody out. Right fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed with a sacrifice fly to right field which tied the game. Two batters later, first baseman Eric Campbell had an infield single to third, which set up a two-out double to left by the next batter in third baseman Zach Lutz.
Fox overall, allowed one run in seven innings, he issued six hits, and didn't walk anyone. It was a tough luck loss for Fresno right-hander Austin Fleet (1-4) who was summoned from A-San Jose. He pitched a season-best seven innings, gave up five hits, two runs (both earned), he walked three, and struck out four. Fleet, in the fifth inning chipped in with a single, which was his first professional hit in 13 at-bats. But shortstop Ehire Adrianza was thrown out at the plate, which would have been the tying run.
The Grizzlies had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning with left fielder Gary Brown at second, and one out but right-hander Greg Burke (5) struck out Dominguez, and Perez to end the game.
Fresno tries to avoid the five-game sweep on Sunday with a 7:05 first pitch. Left-hander Eric Surkamp (6-1) will pitch for Fresno against Las Vegas right-hander Rafael Montero (5-3). The game will take place at Cashman Field.
