Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Quad Cities River Bandits picked up a 3-2 win Saturday over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 4,549 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Bryan Abreu and Chad Donato combined to keep Cedar Rapids (25-10, 57-47) scoreless over the final five frames to earn the win and the save, respectively, for Quad Cities (18-16, 58-46).
The River Bandits opened the scoring with a two-out tally in the second inning. Miguelangel Sierra hit a one-out double and advanced to third base on Michael Papierski's groundout. Logan Mattix drove in Sierra with a single for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead.
During the bottom of the second, Cedar Rapids tied the contest at 1-1. Jean Carlos Arias collected a leadoff bunt single but was retired at second base via force out. Jacob Pearson reached second after Andrew Bechtold's walk, and Trey Cabbage singled to bring in Pearson.
Quad Cities regained the lead, 3-1, within the third. Marty Costes led off with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from Seth Beer. David Hensley followed with a solo home run to right field.
The Kernels cut their deficit in half in the fourth. Bechtold drew a one-out walk prior to a single by Cabbage. Two batters later, a groundball from Gabriel Maciel led to an error that allowed Bechtold to score and trim the River Bandits' lead to 3-2.
Abreu (2-0) and Donato kept Cedar Rapids from pulling even to secure a series-opening victory. Abreu notched a career-best 11 strikeouts including three strikeouts in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Donato pitched four shutout innings of relief for his second save and did not allow any runners to advance past second base.
Blayne Enlow (2-3) posted his fourth consecutive quality start but was tagged with the loss Saturday. Enlow allowed three runs over a personal-high-tying six innings pitched.
The homestand finale between Cedar Rapids and Quad Cities will be played Sunday at 2:05 p.m., and the probable pitchers are Kernels right-hander Jordan Balazovic (5-1, 3.18) and River Bandits left-hander Parker Mushinski (4-2, 2.93).
