Great Lakes Loons News Release

EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Loons' offense piled up double-digit hits for the fourth game straight, and not even a relief appearance by Major Leaguer Andrew Miller was enough to cool the sticks in a 9-2 win over the Lake County Captains at Classic Park on Saturday night.

Miller pitched in the sixth in relief of Lake County starter Gregori Vasquez (L, 5-5) with the Loons in front 3-0. Were it not for an error on Captains' second baseman Richie Palacios, the two-time Major League All-Star may well have completed the frame within his 20-pitch limit. Before the miscue, the Loons rattled off three straight hits against Miller, the sixth overall selection in the 2006 M.L.B. Draft by the Detroit Tigers.

Luke Heyer, who earlier in the game socked his first Loons home run, keyed the offense in the sixth with a one out single off Miller. The next batter, Brock Carpenter, nearly took Miller deep for an opposite field home run, but contented himself with a triple off the wall in the right-field corner to score Heyer and push the Loons' lead to 4-0. Eight-hole hitter Gersel Pitre delivered another solid single to right field that brought Carpenter home.

After Miller exited with two outs in the inning, the Loons struck for another trio of hits off Maiker Manzanillo. All told, the inning produced tallies of six runs and six hits. Miller was saddled with four runs and two earned.

Loons' starter Edwin Uceta (W, 4-6) cemented his candidacy for Midwest League Pitcher of the Month with seven innings pitched and a career-high 11 strikeouts. The 20-year-old carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning that ended with a solo home run by Oscar Gonzalez on the first pitch of the frame. Through five starts in July, Uceta has allowed six earned runs in 31 1/3 innings (1.73 E.R.A.) with 33 strikeouts and six walks.

Great Lakes improves to 3-1 on its road trip and has won eight of its last 10 away from Dow Diamond. The Loons and Captains square off next in a Sunday night showdown from Classic Park at 7 p.m. EDT.

The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
