West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Kody Clemens enjoyed his biggest night as a professional, going 3-for-4 with his first home run at Fifth Third Ballpark as the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the South Bend Cubs in front of 8,472 fans Saturday night by a score of 5-1.
Clemens, the Detroit Tigers third-round draft pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, enjoyed the first three-hit game of his career. The native of Houston, Texas fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in just the 25th game since being drafted from the University of Texas.
A three-run Whitecaps first inning featured a Clemens two-run double and a run-scoring single by Jordan Pearce giving the 'Caps a 3-0 lead. Clemens homered in the third on a towering drive to right field increasing the lead to 4-0. Rey Rivera tacked on an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth growing the lead to 5-0. Cubs outfielder Zach Davis gave South Bend its lone run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but Whitecaps pitchers dominated in allowing only a single run on six base hits in a 5-1 victory.
West Michigan starting pitcher Brad Bass (6-7) tossed seven innings allowing no runs on five hits despite not recording a strikeout in earning his sixth win. Cubs starter Ryan Williams (0-1) hurled five innings permitting five runs on eight hits in suffering his first loss. Both teams hold a 51-53 overall record. Clemens led the offense with three hits, while Garrett McCain and Brady Policelli each chipped in with a pair of singles and a stolen base in the win.
