Bees Take Series Finale 4-2 to Avoid Sweep against Quad Cities
July 28, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA. - It wasn't looking good early for the Burlington Bees (9-22,39-61) after falling behind to the Quad Cities River Bandits (17-16,57-46), but a three run inning helped the Bees take the series finale 4-2. Michael Santos (2-1) earned his second victory in his second straight start, going five innings, allowing two runs, one earned run on four hits, two walks, and set a new season high with seven strikeouts. Edgardo Sandoval (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in his three and two thirds innings of work, where he also threw two walks and seven strikeouts.
Early defensive struggles give River Bandits lead
It was a rough start for the Bees defensively in last night's game. Marty Costes managed to reach first after Connor Fitzsimons failed to make the catch from Leonardo Rivas, and Costes got to second on a passed ball by catcher Harrison Wenson. David Hensley then made the Bees pay on a single to right, driving in Costes and giving the River Bandits a 1-0 lead in the first.
Hensley drives in another in the third
Costes led the third inning off for Quad Cities and reached base again after drawing a walk. Seth Beer then extended his hitting streak to 13 games on a single to right, allowing Costes to reach third. Hensley then hit a sharp grounder to Rivas and he threw it over to Garcia at second and Garcia threw out Hensley at first for a double play, but Costes managed to score from third to give the River Bandits a 2-0 lead.
Garcia delivers a two out RBI
Orlando Martinez managed to avoid a double play after beating Hensley's throw over to first to keep a runner at first. Martinez got over to second on a single from Kevin Williams Jr and advanced to third after stealing his second base. Julio Garcia then sent a double to right field, easily scoring Martinez to make the score 2-1.
Bees go up after three run fifth
Fitzsimons delivered another leadoff hit to start the fifth inning and advanced to second after a one out walk from Rivas. Hunter then delivered the game tying run on a double off the wall in center, tying the game at 2-2. Williams then delivered his own two out hit on a single to right to score both Rivas and Hunter to give the Bees a 4-2 lead.
Wantz and Krzeminski hold the lead
With the Bees holding a two run lead, the bullpen needed to have a great night in order to keep the lead, which is exactly what happened. Andrew Wantz earned his first hold for his two innings, where he allowed just one walk, and struck out the side in the seventh, and another two for a total of five. Austin Krzeminski earned his fourth save for his work in the final two innings, where he did allow a hit, and two walks, but struck out Schreiber for the final out of the game.
Big series for Rubalcaba
Coming into the series against the River Bandits, Alvaro Rubalcaba had just two hits and was hitting on .105. He somehow managed to turn things around completely against Quad Cities, going 7-12 and driving in three runs. Rubalcaba is currently hitting .290 and the man before him Fitzsimons isn't far behind at .289. If the top of the order can start getting averages like the two men at the bottom, the Bees would be a tough offense to stop.
Looking Ahead
The Bees will look to continue the winning at home, as they welcome the Beloit Snappers to begin a four game series. Beloit has been the big surprise in the second half, as they currently sit at second place in the west division at 20-12. Neither team has announced an expected starter, but the Bee will probably start Denny Brady, who threw the game after Santos last week.
