July 28, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - It took almost 24 hours to complete this game after a light at Community Field went out in the bottom of the tenth and the game had to be suspended till the next day. However, the Burlington Bees (8-22,38-61) still fell short to the Quad Cities River Bandits (17-15,57-45) 8-7 in eleven innings. Willy Collado (1-2) earned his first victory with the River Bandits after pitching the final one and two innings, not allowing any baserunners and throwing four strikeouts. Zack Kelly (2-1) suffered his first loss after allowing Quad Cities to go ahead in the eleventh. His stats in the game were two innings pitched, one unearned run allowed, one hit, two walks, and three strikeouts.

Walks cost Ortega in the third

Ortega managed to work his way out of a couple jams early on, but the River Bandits made him pay in the third. After getting leadoff hitter Marty Costes to ground out, Ortega walked Seth Beer and David Hensley to put runners on first and second. Beer and Hensley would advance on a wild pitch and then Ruben Castro drew the third straight walk to load the bases. Colton Shaver then did his job and sent a fly ball deep to right, allowing Beer to score and give Quad Cities a 1-0 lead.

Bees answer with four straight hits

The 1-0 lead didn't hold long for the River Bandits, because the Bees responded with a big third inning. Connor Fitzsimons led the inning off with eighth double and Alvaro Rubalcaba scored him on his second double, tying the game at 1-1. Leonardo Rivas then sent a single barely over the head of Alfredo Angarita at second to put runners at the corners with no outs. Torii Hunter then reached on an infield single, which allowed Rubalcaba to score, giving the Bees a 2-1 lead. Rivas also advanced to third after the throw over to first went past Scott Schreiber for an error.

Rivas would end up getting tagged out after Martinez grounded into a fielder's choice, but Kevin Williams Jr drove in the third run of the inning on a single to center, giving the Bees a 3-1 lead. Spencer Griffin and Keinner Pina would draw back to back walks to load the bases, but Julio Garcia would go down swinging to end the inning.

Fitzsimons and Rubalcaba spark offense again in fourth

Fitzsimons led the fourth inning off as well and delivered another hit for a single. Rubalcaba then delivered his second double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Hunter drove in his second run on his second infield single, giving the Bees a 4-1 lead. Martinez then beat the River Bandits shift, sending a double down the left field line for an opposite field double, scoring two more runs and giving the Bees a 6-1 lead.

River Bandits put up three soon after

Before we could even get the chug, a mug contest going, the River Bandits decided to have a three run inning of their own. Schreiber led the fifth inning off with his first homerun with Quad Cities, making the score 6-2. Beer delivered a single for his second hit and Castro scored him on a two out RBI triple to make it 6-3. Shaver would end up getting his second RBI of the evening after hitting his 16th double of the year, cutting the Bees lead to 6-4.

Error and Beer tie things up in the sixth

Ziemba managed to retire the first two in the sixth, but Schreiber continued the inning with a double for his second extra base hit of the game. Costes then sent a grounder to Rivas at short, but the throw by Rivas went past Fitzsimons, which allowed Schreiber to score and Costes to head to second. Beer would tie things up at 6-6 on a single to center for his third hit of the game.

Both clubs add one in the eighth

Costes got the River Bandits a runner in scoring position right away after hitting his third double of the season to lead off the inning. Beer then reached base for the fifth time after drawing a walk, and Hensley advanced them on a sac bunt. Castro ended up driving in the go ahead run on a fielder's choice to give the River Bandits a 7-6 lead.

The Bees wouldn't be down very long though, as two errors by the River Bandits allowed the Bees to tie the game. Fitzsimons got to second after an error by Sierra at second and would end up advancing to third after a pickoff attempt from Castro went into center field for another error. Rubalcaba then delivered his third hit of the evening for an RBI single to tie the game again at 7-7.

Kelly's struggles lead to go ahead run

Kelly managed to hold the River Bandits scoreless in the tenth inning but didn't have the same success in the eleventh. Angarita drew a leadoff walk and Sierra singled to shallow left to get the River Bandits runners at every base with no outs. Feeling the pressure, Kelly ended up throwing a wild pitch in Schreiber's at bat, allowing Shaver to score and give the River Bandits an 8-7 lead. The Bees would go one-two-three in their eleventh inning thanks to two strikeouts.

Bullpen holds their ground

Jairo Solis had a less than desirable start for the River Bandits, going just three and a third innings, while allowing six runs on ten hits. However, the River Bandits bullpen came in and nearly shutout the Bees for the remainder of the game, allowing the offense to make a comeback. Humberto Castellanos pitched three and two thirds, allowing just a walk and striking out four. Brendan Feldmann did suffer his first blown save after allowing the Bees to tie the game, although the run was unearned. He pitched two innings, gave up two hits, and struck out three.

Rubalcaba and Martinez shine again

It was the second game in a row where Rubalcaba and Martinez both finished the game with three hits. Rubalcaba finished the day 3-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Martinez finished 3-6 with two RBI's. The Bees also got production again from Hunter and Fitzsimons. Both players finished with two hits, and Hunter drove in two runs, while Fitzsimons scored three times.

Beer leads comeback

Beer continued his hitting streak again tonight after going 3-4, driving in one run, and drawing in two walks. Castro and Shaver both only had one hit each, but both managed to drive in two runs for Quad Cities. The River Bandits ended up totaling eleven total hits, five doubles, a triple, and a homerun. They also had great patience at the plate, drawing ten total walks.
