LumberKings drop fifth straight in series opener

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings dropped their fifth straight, falling to the Peoria Chiefs 5-1 on Saturday night at Ashford University Field. Chiefs (21-12, 60-43) starter Alex Fagalde struck out 10 in a night were the LumberKings (17-17, 56-47) went down on strikes 15 times.

Fagalde (6-3) earned the win for Peoria with a seven-inning outing in which he was nearly perfect. The win was his second of the season against Clinton and the second time this year he has struck 10 LumberKings. Fagalde did not allow a run during his time out and allowed just one LumberKing to reach against him.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead against LumberKings starter Scott Boches. Yariel Gonzalez put Peoria on top with a two-run homer to right center, his eighth of the year.

In the top of the fifth, the Chiefs added on against Boches (2-3). Three straight Peoria batters reached with two out in the inning and Zach Kirtley lined a ball up the middle to drive home two and put the Chiefs on top 4-0.

The Chiefs final run of the game came across in the seventh inning. Elehuris Montero hit the first pitch of the inning on top of the berm in left for his 14th home run of the season.

The LumberKings avoided the shutout in the bottom of the eighth. Keegan McGovern doubled down the line at third and scored three pitches later on a Johnny Adams RBI single into center field.

The loss is the LumberKings fifth straight and is tied for the second longest losing streak of the season.

The LumberKings will meet the Peoria Chiefs for the second game of their four-game home stand on Sunday afternoon. Clinton will throw right-hander Randy Bell (2-3, 7.09) while the Chiefs will tap righty Johan Oviedo (6-7, 5.07). Game time is slated for 6:30 PM (CDT).
