Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - The Lansing Lugnuts scored the tie-breaking run on an unusual play in the top of the eighth inning and held on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Saturday night. The game was played at Fifth Third Field before a crowd of 7,881.

The Lugnuts scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. The Dragons battled back with single runs in four different innings to tie the game 4-4 in the sixth, getting solo home runs from Hendrik Clementina in the second and Raul Wallace in the fifth.

In the top of the eighth, Lansing's Ryan Noda reached on a single to right field with one out to start their rally. Brandon Grudzielanek followed with an excellent bunt to the left side. Dragons third baseman Leandro Santana fielded the bunt, but his throw to first was late and sailed over the head of Reshard Munroe, skipping off the back of the Lansing bullpen catcher. Munroe retrieved the ball as Noda rounded third and tried to score. Munroe threw home and Noda was tagged out by Dragons catcher Mark Kolozvary as Grudzielanek tried to advance all the way to third base on the play. Kolozsvary fired to third, but the throw glanced off the glove of shortstop Jeter Downs, bounced into foul territory, and Grudzielanek came in to score. Santana was charged with a throwing error on the play and Downs was given an error on the missed catch at third.

The Dragons could not advance a runner past first base over the final two innings as they fell to the Lugnuts in the first game of the four-game series.

Clementina had a good night at the plate for the Dragons, going 2 for 3 with his 13th home run of the year, a double, walk, and two runs scored. Wallace also had two hits including a 414 foot home run off the batter's eye in center field that was clocked off the bat at 110 mph.

Dragons starting pitcher Austin Orewiler allowed four runs (two earned) in the second but settled down and followed that rough inning with four scoreless frames. Over his six innings, Orewiler allowed five hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Cory Thompson (5-4) worked two innings in relief of Orewiler and was charged with the loss, allowing the unearned run in the eighth.

In the Standings: The Dragons fell to 17-18 in the second half with the loss. They remained in the lead for the wildcard spot in the Midwest League's East Division Second Half race, one-half game ahead of both Fort Wayne and Lake County. Lansing improved to 17-18.
