Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - Edwin Uceta gave the Lake County Captains (16-18, 45-59) on Saturday night. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out 11 to lead the Great Lakes Loons (12-23, 36-67) to a 9-2 victory in the opener of a four-game series at Classic Park.
Uceta dominated the Captains over the first six innings. After a one-two-three first with a pair of strikeouts, the right-hander worked around a leadoff walk in the second with a 6-4-3 double play and, after walking Will Benson, got Josh Rolette to pop out down the left field line. Following the second walk of the second, Uceta retired 13 consecutive Captains with four straight perfect innings.
Meanwhile, the Loons' offense went to work. Great Lakes grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Captains starter Gregori Vasquez. Josh McLain led off with a double and Deacon Liput followed with an automatic double that bounced over the left-centerfield wall to plate McLain with the game's first run. Two batters later, Drew Avans singled to score Liput. The Loons added another run against Vasquez in the fourth when Luke Heyer led off with a solo homer to left.
Indians left-hander Andrew Miller came in to pitch the sixth as part of his Major League rehab assignment. After getting Romer Cuadrado to ground to shortstop for the first out, Heyer singled and Brock Carpenter hit a high fly ball down the right field line that bounded off the wall and kicked toward the Captains' bullpen for an RBI triple to give the Loons a 4-0 lead. Gersel Pitre came up next and singled to right, bringing home Carpenter. The rally continued with shaky defense. With a man on first and one out, McLain hit a grounder to second base, but Richard Palacios misplayed it for an error and a passed ball by Rolette moved the runners to second and third. Miller struck out Liput to end his night after 2/3 of an inning and Maiker Manzanillo came in from the bullpen.
Great Lakes quickly pounced on Manzanillo. With two outs and two in scoring position, Moises Perez singled to score both Pitre and McLain. After a single by Avans, Devin Mann doubled in two more runs to balloon the Great Lakes advantage to 9-0. Miller was charged with four runs - two earned - on three hits. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Uceta carried his no-hitter into the seventh, but it did not last long. On the first pitch of the inning, Oscar Gonzalez lifted a solo home run into the left field bleachers to hang tallies in the hit and run columns for Lake County. Two batters later, Nolan Jones copied Gonzalez with a solo shot off the batter's eye in centerfield. Those proved to be the Captains' only runs of the game.
Uceta (4-6) earned the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked two.
Vasquez (5-5) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in five innings. The Captains' righty gave up six hits. Walked two and struck out two.
The Captains have lost two in a row and will try to rebound in game two against the Loons. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Classic Park.
