Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Cedar Rapids Kernels grabbed an early 2-0 lead Tuesday evening at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium before the Quad Cities River Bandits surged to a victory of 8-3. Quad Cities improved to 52-25 and currently tops all High-A Central teams with a .675 win percentage.

A two-run second inning put the Kernels (44-35) in front. Max Smith's bases-loaded single plated Wander Javier, and Gabriel Maciel followed with a sacrifice fly that brought in Yunior Severino for a 2-0 advantage.

John Rave was responsible for the next five runs of Tuesday's tilt as the River Bandits roared to a 5-2 edge. Rave produced a run-scoring double in the fourth and a three-run triple during the sixth. He later added a run on Maikel Garcia's RBI single.

The Kernels answered in their half of the sixth after falling behind earlier in the inning. Cedar Rapids immediately loaded the bases and got a sacrifice fly by Maciel to drive in Seth Gray and cut the deficit to 5-3.

Quad Cities pulled away with three late tallies that close out the 8-3 triumph. Gavin Stupienski collected an RBI double within the eighth inning. Nathan Eaton and Rave hit back-to-back run-scoring singles in the ninth.

Dante Biasi (4-1) was tagged for just one run over 3.2 innings pitched and earned the win. Will Klein and Garrett Davila tossed scoreless relief for the hold and the save, respectively.

Jon Olsen (1-4) ended up with the loss despite leaving in line for the win. He yielded just one run over his first five innings, but he bequeathed a bases-loaded jam to the bullpen in the sixth with all three runners scoring to put Olsen into the loss column.

Game two of this six-game homestand will be at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Left-handed pitcher Tyler Watson (2-1, 1.68) is scheduled to start for the Kernels, and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the action on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
