Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - West Michigan pitchers Brendan White and Bryce Tassin combined to scatter nine hits as the Whitecaps topped the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Wednesday night. West Michigan has won the first two games of the seven-game series.
Dayton had base runners in eight of the nine innings and saw their lead-off man deliver a hit in each of the first five innings of the game, but they could not come up with the big hit. The Dragons went 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners.
Francisco Urbaez led the Dayton offense by reaching base four times with three singles and a walk. He raised his batting average to .338, second best in the High-A Central League. Alex McGarry had two hits for Dayton. Miguel Hernandez had a double for the Dragons only extra base hit.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Michael Siani singled to right field to open the game, stole second, and eventually scored on a groundout by James Free. But West Michigan tied the game in the second inning and then added three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead and close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher JC Keys (3-1) was charged with the loss. He worked two and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Dragons bullpen combination of Spencer Stockton, John Ghyzel, and Stevie Branche shutout the Whitecaps over the final five and one-third innings. Branche, just called up from Daytona on Tuesday, twice fired strikes at 99 mph in his only inning of work. He struck out three and walked one in the inning.
The Race: The Dragons were two and one-half games behind Great Lakes in the East Division of the High-A Central League when the day began. Great Lakes trailed Fort Wayne 12-4 in the eighth inning as this story was posted.
Up Next: The Dragons (41-38) battle West Michigan (38-41) in the third game of the series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Jacques Pucheu (3-1, 4.14) will pitch for Dayton against Adam Wolf (3-2, 3.64).
