Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Davenport, IA - C.J. Riefenhauser faced the minimum 15 batters over five innings and the Hot Rods smacked a team-record seven doubles to break their six-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits (14-10, 54-39) on Monday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. The Hot Rods (10-14, 51-43) picked up 13 hits, the most in a single game on their now-completed 2-7 road trip heading into an off-day on Tuesday.
Riefenhauser began his day with a perfect first inning, recording the first of his five strikeouts. That would be a common theme as the lefty retired the next nine batters through the end of the fourth inning in a scoreless game.
In the fifth, the Hot Rods gave Riefenhauser a lead by manufacturing a run. Robi Estrada hit the first of his two doubles down the left field line. He took third on a sacrifice by Cody Rogers before scoring on a single from Steve Tinoco for a 1-0 lead.
Riefenhauser then came on for the bottom of the fifth recording the first out before an infield single from Victor Sanchez broke up his perfect start. He retired the next hitter on a strikeout before Sanchez was thrown out at second trying to advance on a ball in the dirt. That final out ended the day for Riefenhauser, who allowed one hit and retired the first 13 hitters he faced. Overall he retired 14 of the 15 batters, striking out five without giving up a walk.
The Hot Rods added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, once again working the sacrifice to their advantage. A lead-off double from Robby Price was followed by the first sacrifice from Kevin Kiermaier. That bunt attempt was compounded with an error to move Kiermaier to second while Price scored for a 2-0 lead. After a second sac bunt, Kiermaier scored on Estrada's second double to push the lead to 3-0.
A fifth double from the Hot Rods added another run in the seventh. With birthday-boy Derek Dietrich at first, Julio Cedeno filled the gap in right center to score Dietrich for the team's fourth run.
Bowling Green added two more insurance runs in the ninth, setting the new team record for doubles in the process. Dietrich began the frame with the sixth team double of the day. He took third on a single by Cedeno before scoring on Price's third two-base hit of the day, the team's seventh, to place the lead at five runs. A groundout from Kiermaier followed to cap the scoring at 6-0.
Nate Garcia and Chris Rearick closed down the shutout by throwing two scoreless innings each. Garcia allowed one hit with four K's. Rearick gave up two hits in the ninth, but escaped the jam to end the game.
Price led the Hot Rods offensively with three of the seven doubles. He also reached base with a walk and drove in his 33rd run of the season. Cedeno finished with three hits, including an RBI double. Estrada (two doubles), Tinoco (two singles), and Dietrich (double, single) all had multi-hit days in the victory.
The Hot Rods now enjoy on off-day on Tuesday before beginning a six-game homestand on Wednesday night against the Burlington Bees (Oakland Athletics). First pitch is 7:05 PM on Wednesday night. Gates open at 5:30 for Season Ticket holders, 6 PM for the general public.
The pitching match-up on Wednesday features RHP George Jensen (8-4, 5.64) against Burlington RHP Blake Hassebrock (5-5, 2.03). You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier and Josh Weinstock at 6:40 PM on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
