Dayton Dragons News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa-Donald Lutz's single to left field with one out in the top of the ninth inning drove in Dominic D'Anna from second base to break a 4-4 tie as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-4 on Monday afternoon. The Dragons won two-out-of-three in the series and gained sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division with a second half record of 16-8. Dayton split the six games on their road trip to Western Division cities.

With the score tied 4-4 entering the ninth, D'Anna led off with a single to left field. David Vidal followed with a single to left to move D'Anna to second. Lutz then drove a hit through the hole into left field to bring in D'Anna and give the Dragons a 5-4 lead. Tucker Barnhart followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Vidal and make it 6-4.

Dragons reliever Chad Rogers (3-4) closed out the win with a scoreless bottom of the ninth to give the Dragons seven series wins among eight played in the second half.

The Dragons broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning when Ronald Torreyes delivered a single to drive in Billy Hamilton from second and D'Anna followed with a double to drive in Torreyes to make it 4-2. Cedar Rapids battled back, getting a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth from Ricky Alvarez and a game-tying homer from Travis Witherspoon in the sixth.

The Dragons collected 12 hits. Torreyes was 3 for 5 and scored two runs to raise his average to .355. D'Anna and Theo Bowe each had two hits.

The Dragons' win coupled with a loss by Lansing at Clinton gave the Dragons a one-game lead in the Eastern Division. Great Lakes is two games back and West Michigan trails by three games. The top two teams in the eight-team division will qualify for the playoffs with Lansing and Bowling Green not in contention since they have already earned post-season bids.

Dayton (16-8, 51-43) does not play on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday when they host the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Field. Daniel Corcino (8-4) will start for Dayton. On July 23, the Dragons and their fans will enjoy a celebration at Fifth Third Field in relation to the Dragons setting the all-time sports record for consecutive sell-outs. A commemorative poster will be given away to all fans after the game. For information on lawn tickets and group seating options, call (937) 228-2287.
