TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and the New Britain Rock Cats will meet in the opener of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels rallied from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 5-4, series-deciding win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in the series opener for the Flying Squirrels...Suffered the loss in his last start against New Hampshire 8/10...Allowed seven runs on six hits in four innings...Struck out four batters and walked two...Five of the six hits allowed went for extra bases including three home runs...Recorded five ground outs and three fly outs...Allowed the leadoff man to reach in three of his four innings on the mound...Threw 74 pitches, 46 strikes...Has given up 13 home runs over his last 33 2/3 innings between Triple-A Fresno and Richmond...Had allowed just three home runs in his first 96 1/3 innings with Richmond...Did not allow more than four runs, three earned, in his first 17 outings with Richmond...Start was his shortest with the Flying Squirrels...Ranks second in the Eastern League with a 2.83 ERA...Trying to become the eighth pitcher to record 10 wins in the Eastern League...Is 5-0 with a 2.03 ERA in seven starts in his career against New Britain.
Left-hander Tyler Robertson gets the nod in the series opener for the Rock Cats...Received a no-decision in his last outing at Erie 8/11...Allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings...Struck out three batters and walked two...Has not won since 7/15 against Portland...Is 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA over his last five outings...Has allowed 34 hits over his last 27 1/3 innings (.301 OBA)...Began the season 0-7 over his first 13 starts and did not earn his first win until 6/29 against Trenton in game two of a double-header...Is tied for fifth in the Eastern League in losses (11)...Has allowed 147 hits in 115 innings (.315 OBA), fourth-most hits allowed in the league...Is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts against Richmond...Has allowed six runs on 19 hits in 16 innings while striking out eight batters and walking five...Spent all of 2009 with Advanced-A Fort Meyers and went 8-8 with a 3.33 ERA in 26 starts...Struck out 103 batters in 143 1/3 innings pitched...Selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
BACK ON EVEN GROUND?: With a win tonight, the Flying Squirrels can reach the .500 mark for the first time since 6/10 when the
club was 30-30...Since dropping to a season-worst eight games under .500 at 42-50 on 7/16, the Flying Squirrels are 17-10 over their last 27 games.
SERIES STREAK: The Flying Squirrels are undefeated over their last five series, going 4-0-1 over that stretch...Since dropping its last series to Reading 7/26-7/28, Richmond is 10-5.
RALLY SQUIRRELS: Richmond scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 4-0 deficit and defeat Portland 5-4 on Sunday night...It matched the largest come-from-behind win of the season for the club...The Flying Squirrels also trailed the Bowie Baysox 4-0 after six innings 5/10 at Prince George's Stadium before scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning and eventually winning 5-4...It was the most runs scored by Richmond in the ninth inning this season...The club had previously scored three runs twice (4/28 at New Britain and 7/23 at Erie).
AT A BOY-ER: Infielder Brad Boyer went 4-for-9 (.444) with a double, three RBI, and a run scored and was the only Flying Squirrels batter to get a hit in all three games of the series against Portland...The 26-year-old went 3-for-3 with runners in scoring position in the series including hitting a game-tying single in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Sea Dogs...Enter the series, he was just 5-for-27 (.185) with runners in scoring position in his first 24 games with Richmond.
UNBUCKLING THE BELT: In 114 games combined between Advanced-A San Jose and Double-A Richmond, first baseman Brandon Belt is tied for the lead in all of minor league baseball in on-base percentage (.463), is second in batting average (.365), and is third in slugging percentage (.625)...The 22-year-old is batting .462 (18-for-39) with runners in scoring position in 37 games with the Flying Squirrels and is hitting .405 (51-for-126) overall with runners in scoring position this season.
RAY OF SUNSHINE: Right-hander Ronnie Ray tossed a scoreless inning in Sunday night's 5-4 win over the Sea Dogs and earned his second win of the season...He has tossed seven consecutive scoreless innings with four strikeouts and three walks spanning his last six outings, and opposing hitters are just 3-for-24 (.125) against him over that stretch...Since 6/20, the 26-year-old is 2-0 with two saves and has allowed just four runs, two earned in 25 2/3 innings (0.70 ERA) while striking out 26 batters and walking seven spanning his last 22 outings...Opposing hitters are batting .146 (13-for-89) against him over that stretch.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 145 double plays in 118 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The Flying Squirrels have not gone more than three games without a double play this season...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Flying Squirrels won for just the second time when trailing after eight innings, improving to 2-52 after Sunday night's 5-4, come-from-behind win over the Sea Dogs...The club's only other win when trailing after eight innings came at New Britain 4/28 when Richmond rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning and knocked off the Rock Cats 5-3.
