New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats pounded out 14 hits - led by Steve Singleton's three-hit performance - in an 8-5 victory over Richmond in the opening game of a three-game series.

The Rock Cats took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Joe Benson led off the inning with a base hit to right field, but was thrown out at second when Evan Bigley grounded into a double play. Chris Parmelee then lined a single into center before Juan Portes drilled a double off the center field wall to knock in Parmelee. The `Cats tacked on three more runs in the second. Jair Fernandez opened the inning with a single and Estarlin De Los Santos crushed a double to right-center field to put both runners in scoring position. That set the stage for Mark Dolenc's three-run shot to left field that just cleared the inside of the foul pole for a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Tyler Robertson cruised through the first three innings, allowing just one single in the second. Robertson issued a walk to Darren Ford before Nick Noonan doubled in Ford to put the Flying Squirrels on the board, 4-1. Sharlon Schoop added a two run double to bring Richmond within one.

In the sixth, the Rock Cats jumped ahead 6-3 on Bigley's two-run single to left field.

Ford added an RBI triple for Richmond in the top of the fifth. Robertson allowed a Thomas Neal double and Brandon Belt single to start off the sixth. He struck out the next batter before being lifted for Steve Hirschfeld. Schoop greeted Hirschfeld with a sacrifice fly that scored Neal to bring the Flying Squirrels within one run again, 6-5. That was as close as they would come as the Rock Cats' bullpen shut down Richmond the rest of the way.

Robertson (3-11) finished with five runs on six hits through 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four. Hirschfeld and Billy Bullock combined for 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief. Bullock struck out four in two hitless innings as he notched his ninth save of the season.

Daryl Maday (9-7) was hammered for 10 hits and six runs in just 3 2/3 innings.
