READING, PA - The Aeros split two games with the Reading Phillies Tuesday night after winning the opening continuation game 8-7, while dropping the second game 9-7 in front of 6,783 at FirstEnergy Stadium. The continuation game was originally started on July 25th, while the second game was rescheduled for seven innings. Akron now stands at 63-58 while Reading stands at 58-62.
The continuation game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth with the score tied 5-5 when rain halted play. Center fielder Jordan Henry began the game on a strong note as he doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the first. Akron continued to pounce on Phillies starter Ty Taubenheim in the second, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from left fielder John Drennen. Right fielder Jerad Head followed with a two-run homer to right on his first pitch. Reading responded as Kevin Mahar provided a solo home run with one out against left starter Kelvin De La Cruz. A bases loaded walk to Matt Rizzotti in the third then made the score 4-2. Akron added their final run on a single from second baseman Jason Kipnis in the fourth. De La Cruz left the game in the fourth after a pair of runs scored to tie the game before the rains came.
Reading resumed action tonight adding two more runs in the inning when Tagg Bozied hit a two RBI double. The Aeros responded when Head, who joined the team from Class AAA Columbus today, hit a three-run home run to take the lead 8-7.
Right-handed pitcher Rob Bryson earned his first win, and only decision, of the season with 2.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, and three strikeouts. Southpaw Sergio Escalona (2-7) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on Head's home run.
In the second game, Akron started scoring early with four runs in the first thanks to third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall's RBI double and first baseman Beau Mills three-run home run. The R-Phils responded with a two-run homer by Bozied.
The Aeros added another in the top of the second when Kipnis doubled to left field scoring shortstop Cristo Arnal. Reading gained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Tuffy Gosewisch hit an RBI single, followed by Harold Garcia's three-run home run to left field.
Akron tied the game 6-6 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single. Reading took the lead for good during their next at bat when Freddy Galvis scored on a wild pitch by lefty starter Matt Packer during Keoni De Renne's plate appeance, who soon singled in Harold Garcia. Both teams added runs in the fifth to set up the final 9-7 score.
Packer took the loss after allowing all nine runs on nine hits with three home runs, a walk, and a strikeout. Yohan Flande (9-7) earned the win with five innings pitched, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits, one home run, one strike out and one walk.
Akron is now two games back of Bowie for the wild card, but caught up with Harrisburg in third place in the Western Division after the Senators lost to Erie 4-3. Akron will continue their series with the Phillies Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Scott Barnes (6-8, 4.66 ERA) takes the mound for the Aeros against Reading's J.C. Ramirez (3-3, 5.37 ERA).
