TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and the Portland Sea Dogs will meet in game two of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs and held on to a 3-2, series-opening win over the Sea Dogs on Friday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander David Mixon gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Was the scheduled starter for 8/12 against New Hampshire (rained out)...Received a no-decision in his last start at Portland 8/6...Allowed three runs on five hits in five innings...Struck out five batters and walked one...Three of the five hits allowed were doubles...Allowed the leadoff man to reach in three of his five innings (scored twice)...Recorded six ground outs and three fly outs...Threw 84 pitches, 57 strikes...Threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 21 batters he faced...Right-handed batters hitting .227 (62-for-273) against him while left-handed batters are hitting .296 (73-for-247) against him...Is 5-4 with a 4.37 ERA in 14 starts at The Diamond while going 5-2 with a 2.54 ERA in nine starts on the road...Has gone at least six innings in 15 of his 23 starts...Has allowed two runs or less in 16 of his 23 outings...Is third in the Eastern League innings pitched (139.0), fifth in WHIP (1.19), and is eighth in strikeouts (101)....Trying to become just the third pitcher in the Eastern League to 11 wins (Jared Hughes, Kyle Drabek).
Right-hander Kyle Weiland gets the nod in game two of the series for the Sea Dogs...Suffered the loss in his last start against Bowie 8/4...Allowed five runs, four earned, on a season-high 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings...Struck out one batter and walked two...Is 0-2 in his last two starts and has allowed 13 runs, 11 earned, on 16 hits in 10 innings (9.90 ERA) while striking out nine batters and walking four...Went 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts combined in May and June...Has struckout 100 batters and has walked 39 in 104 1/3 innings...Leads all Eastern League starters in strikeouts per nine innings (8.63)...Ranks fifth overall in the Eastern League with a .231 batting average against and is 11th in strikeouts...Has hit more batters, 14, than any other pitcher in the league...Went 7-9 with a 3.46 ERA in 26 starts with Advanced-A Salem in 2009...Struck out 112 batters and walked 57 in 132 2/3 innings...Made pro debut with Short Season-A Lowell in 2008 and went 3-3 with a 1.50 ERA in 15 games, 10 starts...Allowed 36 hits (.166 OBA) and struck out 68 batters while walking 10 in 60 innings...Selected by the Boston Red Sox in the third round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Notre Dame...Was the school's all-time saves leader with 25...Enters the 2010 season rated as the #26 prospect in the Boston Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America.
BACK ON EVEN GROUND?: With a win tonight, the Flying Squirrels can reach the .500 mark for the first time since 6/10 when the club was 30-30...Richmond is one game under .500 for the first time since being 32-33 on 6/15...Since dropping to a season-worst eight games under .500 at 42-50 on 7/16, the Flying Squirrels are 16-9 over their last 25 games.
RAY OF SUNSHINE: Right-hander Ronnie Ray tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 in last night's 3-2 win over the Sea Dogs and earned his 10th hold of the season, tied for third-most in the Eastern League...He has tossed six consecutive scoreless innings with three strikeouts and three walks spanning his last five outings, and opposing hitters are just 2-for-20 (.100) against him over that stretch...Since 6/20, the 26-year-old is 1-0 with two saves has allowed just four runs, two earned in 24 2/3 innings (0.73 ERA) while striking out 25 batters and walking seven spanning his last 21 outings...Opposing hitters are batting .141 (12-for-85) against him over that stretch.
THE WEATHER MAN: Third baseman Conor Gillaspie has hits in each of his last eight contests, matching his longest hit streak of the season...The 23-year-old is 12-for-33 (.364) with four doubles, a home run, six RBI, and six runs scored...Since 7/1, he is batting .379 (47-for-124) with eight doubles, three triples, two home runs, 21 RBI, and 16 runs scored...Gillaspie has raised his batting average from .254 to .293 since 7/1.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal has hits in each of his last seven games, his ninth hit streak of five games or more...Over his last seven games, the 22-year-old is 14-for-35 (.400) at the plate with six doubles, three RBI, and seven runs scored...He is tied for second in the Eastern League in hits (132) and is fifth in doubles (33)...Since 6/1, Neal is batting .325 (80-for-246) in 65 games with 22 doubles, seven home runs, 35 RBI, and 40 runs scored...He has raised his batting average from .255 to .295 over that span.
RISING TIMPNER-TURE: Outfielder Clay Timpner has hits in each of his last six games...The 27-year-old is 9-for-24 (.375) with a double, a triple, five RBI, and four runs scored...His 13-game hit streak (4/28-5/19) is the longest of the season for a Richmond batter.
UNBUCKLING THE BELT: In 112 games combined between Advanced-A San Jose and Double-A Richmond, first baseman Brandon Belt is tied for first in all of minor league baseball in on-base percentage (.463), is second in batting average (.366), is third in slugging percentage (.631), and is fifth in hits (148)...The 22-year-old is batting .447 (17-for-38) with runners in scoring position in 35 games with the Flying Squirrels and is hitting .400 (50-for-125) overall with runners in scoring position this season.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 144 double plays in 117 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The Flying Squirrels have not gone more than three games without a double play this season...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Left-hander Clayton Tanner walked a career-high six batters in 6 2/3 innings last night...It matched a season-high for walks in a game by a Richmond pitcher as right-hander Michael Main also walked six batters 7/24 at Bowie...Entering last night's contest, Tanner had walked just five batters in his previous 22 2/3 innings spanning four starts.
