Fisher Cats Combine on Three-Hitter, But Fall 2-0 in Altoona

(Altoona, PA)---The Fisher Cats and Altoona followed up their 19-inning marathon with a snappy two-hour game which featured tremendous pitching. Altoona took the middle game of the series 2-0 before 5,934 Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark.
Three New Hampshire pitchers combined to allow just three hits, two coming in the second inning when the Curve (69-50) scored their runs.
Altoona plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning off New Hampshire starter B. J. LaMura. Jordy Mercer singled, Miles Durham walked and Jim Negrych doubled into the left field corner scoring both runners.
The length of the game in terms of time (5:49) and innings played (19) were franchise records for both New Hampshire and Altoona. Unfortunately for the Fisher Cats, it was the second straight marathon which ended with a walk-off home run. New Hampshire lost in 14 innings at Richmond on Wednesday night on Brandon Belt's game-ending blast.
The Fisher Cats (68-50) took the lead in the top of the third inning. After two were out, Darin Mastroianni singled and stole second. Adeiny Hechavarria doubled Mastroianni in to put New Hampshire up 1-0. Eric Thames followed with his 22nd home run, a shot into the first row of the bleachers in left field to make it 3-0.
Altoona (68-50) scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jordy Mercer singled and moved to third on a single by Durham (4-for-9, HR, RBI). Yung-Chi Chen grounded to third and the Fisher Cats tried unsuccessfully to get Mercer at the plate. After Zach Stewart struck out Anthony Norman, Jim Negrych singled home Durham to make it 3-2.
The Curve tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrew Lambo walked, Matt Hague singled him to third and Lambo scored on Mercer's ground out.
Stewart left after 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.
Both bullpens were tremendous. Altoona relievers Michael Colla, Derek Hankins, Michael Dubee, Anthony Claggett and Tom Boleska (1-0) tossed 15 innings of scoreless relief. New Hampshire managed just three hits after the sixth inning, but could not plate the go-ahead run.
New Hampshire's bullpen of B.J. LaMura, Alan Farina, Trystan Magnuson, Clint Everts and Boomer Potts worked a combined 12.2 scoreless. Altoona had its chances, leaving 20 runners on base in the game.
The series and road trip concludes Sunday night at 6:00pm at Blair County Ballpark. New Hampshire is scheduled to start RHP Randy Boone (3-8, 4.30) against Curve LHP Rudy Owens (9-6, 2.74). Live coverage can be heard on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman beginning at 5:45pm.
