Chesapeake Baysox News Release
ERIE, Pa. - Baysox starter Eddie Gamboa won his second consecutive start and fourth consecutive decision Saturday night, leading the Baysox past the Erie SeaWolves 10-4. The victory snapped Erie's eight-game winning streak. The right-hander improved to 5-4 on the season after holding the SeaWolves to four runs on six hits and a walk over 6.0 innings. It was his longest start since throwing 6.0 innings August 24, 2008, and just short of his career high, set July 26, 2008, when he threw 7.0 innings against the Burlington Royals in the Appalachian League.
Baysox right fielder Joel Guzman, third baseman Ryan Adams and shortstop Greg Miclat each had three hits to pace a Baysox offense that recorded 15 hits. Catcher Steve Lerud, Guzman and designated hitter Joe Mahoney each homered in the contest.
The SeaWolves scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After Gamboa retired the side in order in the bottom of the first inning, Erie first basemen Rawley Bishop led off the bottom of the second frame with a double to left field and scored when the next batter singled to center field. Bishop has been a problem for the Baysox all season, he entered the game batting .500 (15-30) against Bowie, with two doubles, one home run and eight RBIs.
Bowie responded with three runs in the top of the third inning. Miclat led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on an infield single by second baseman Carlos Rojas. With center fielder Xavier Avery batting, Erie catcher Andy Bouchier was charged with a passed ball that allowed both runners to advance to scoring position. Avery singled to left field, plating Miclat and moving Rojas up to third base. Adams followed with another single to left, scoring Rojas and giving the Baysox the lead. Left fielder Tyler Henson drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out and Mahoney capped the scoring with a one-out RBI single to right field, putting the Baysox in front 3-1 before a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning.
The Baysox extended the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Miclat led off with a single to center field and Rojas drew a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Avery moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout and Adams drove both in with a single to center field, putting the Baysox on top 5-1.
After adding another run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Lerud, the Baysox threatened to blow the game open in the top of the sixth inning. Adams hit a one-out single to center field, and Henson and Guzman followed with singles to left field to load the bases. Mahoney hit a ground ball back to the Mound and Erie reliever Jose Ortega threw home for the second out of the inning. First baseman Brandon Waring drew a walk to force in a run, giving Bowie a 6-1 advantage before Lerud grounded out to end the inning.
Bishop struck again in the bottom of the sixth frame. After second baseman Brandon Douglas and left fielder Brandon Jones hit one-out singles, Bishop launched a three-run home to left center field, cutting the Baysox lead to 7-4.
A pair of home runs gave the Baysox three more insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Adams drew a one-out walk, reaching base for the fourth time in the game and the seventh time over the last two contests, and two batters later Guzman crushed his Eastern League-leading 27th home run of the season to left field. After the home run, the SeaWolves brought in reliever Matt Hoffman in to pitch and Mahoney greeted him to the game with a solo home run to center field, giving the Baysox a 10-4 lead.
Right-hander Sean Gleason relieved Gamboa to open the seventh inning and worked two scoreless innings, holding Erie to pair of singles. Right-hander Pedro Beato worked a scoreless ninth inning to close out the victory.
With the win, the Baysox improve to 64-55 on the season. The remain in second place in the Eastern League's Western Division, 4.0 games behind the Altoona Curve and 1.0 game in front of the Harrisburg Senators with 23 games left to play.
