TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Akron Aeros will meet in game one of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels completed a three-game sweep of the SeaWolves by overcoming an early 3-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Felix Romero gets the start in the opener of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision in his last start at Akron 6/23...Allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings...Struck out seven and walked none...Retired 13 of 14 batters including 12 straight (1st-5th)...Retired the leadoff batter in six of his seven innings on the mound...Recorded nine ground outs and four fly outs...Threw 95 pitches, 63 strikes...Outing was the longest of his professional career...Seven strikeouts was one short of matching a career-high...Is 0-1 with a 3.78 ERA (7ER/16.2 IP) in three starts with Richmond...Prior to this season, had not started since 8/21/08 against Toledo while with Triple-A Norfolk...Began the season with Triple-A Fresno and appeared in seven games going 0-0 with a 6.52 ERA...Spent all of 2009 with Fresno and appeared in 50 games, all in relief and second-most on the club (Geno Espineli - 52)...Went 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA...Struck out 69 batters and walked 16 over 73 2/3 innings...Signed by the San Francisco Giants as a minor league free agent December 18, 2008...Originally signed as a non-drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998...Has spent time with the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Orioles, and Giants organizations over his nine-year professional career...Did not play in 2006...Is the oldest member of the Flying Squirrels roster.
Right-hander Paolo Espino gets the nod in the opener of the series for the Aeros...Received a no-decision in his last start 6/23 against Richmond...Allowed four runs on six hits in five innings...Struck out four batters and walked none...All four runs allowed came in the fifth including a three-run homer from Clay Timpner...Is 5-2 with a 4.47 ERA in 10 starts...Is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in five appearances in relief...Start was his first since 5/27 against Altoona...Each of his previous four appearances came following left-hander Nick Hagadone...Has not lost since 5/16 against Reading...Appeared at three different levels in 2009...Pitched in one game with Akron and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in three innings of work...Spent the majority of the season with Advanced-A Kinston and went 9-6 with a 2.59 ERA in 22 games including 21 starts...Went 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA in five games including two starts with Low-A Lake County...Struck out 117 batters and walked 36 in 134 2/3 innings of work in 2009...Selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft...Enters the 2010 season rated as the #30 prospect in the Cleveland Indians farm system according to Baseball America.
FRIENDLY CONFINES: The Flying Squirrels hit .320 (39-for-122) over the course of their three-game series with the SeaWolves at Jerry Uht Park...Of the club's 39 hits, 11 went for extra bases including six doubles and five home runs...In 13 games at hitter-friendly FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading and Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Richmond is batting .277 (130-for-469) with 41 extra base hits including 15 of the club's 40 home runs...In 63 games played outside of Reading and Erie, the Flying Squirrels are hitting a combined .241 (494-for-2053)...Richmond is batting .245 as a team with 11 home runs in 37 games at The Diamond.
RUN AWAY: Richmond went 0-for-9 in throwing out base runners on the six-game road trip including allowing Erie to swipe four bases on Friday...The club currently ranks last in the Eastern League in stolen base against efficiency, having thrown out just 24.7% (18-for-73) of would-be base stealers...Since Jackson Williams threw out a pair of base runners 6/17 against Binghamton, the opposition is 10-for-12 in stolen base attempts against Richmond (nine games)...The last two base runners that were thrown out came on pick-offs.
SWEEP DREAMS: The Flying Squirrels claimed their fourth series sweep of the season with yesterday's 5-4 win over the SeaWolves...It was the club's first series sweep since taking all three games in its series against Bowie 4/30-5/2...Richmond's other two sweeps have come against New Britain (4/19-4/21, 4/26-4/28)...The Flying Squirrels have been swept three times.
GETTING SERIE-OUS: Richmond improved to 2-9-2 over its last 13 series (5/13-6/27) with its series sweep of Erie...The only other series win for the Flying Squirrels over that stretch came against New Britain 6/8-6/10 when the club took two of three games...Prior to the skid, Richmond had gone 6-1-1 over its previous eight series spanning from 4/15-5/2.
PEN-NY SAVERS: Flying Squirrels starters have gone six innings or more in each of the last 10 contests...The longest streak of six innings or more from the starting pitchers had been three games 6/8-6/10...Over the last 10 games, Flying Squirrels' starters have allowed 28 runs, 23 earned, on 62 hits in 66 innings while striking 33 and walking 19 (3.14 ERA)...Starters are 3-4 over the last 10 games.
HITTER BY DESIGNATION: The Flying Squirrels are hitting .258 (296-for-1148) with the designated hitter in the line up...The club is batting .239 (328-for-1374) with the pitcher batting...Richmond DHs are batting just .189 (24-for-127) on the season; however, the DHs are just 4-for-70 over the last 19 games against American League affiliates (since 5/18)...The Flying Squirrel DHs were hitting .357 (20-for-56) over their first 16 games...Richmond pitchers are hitting just .130 (12-for-92) at the plate with 52 strikeouts...The Flying Squirrels are 21-14 against American League affiliates and will face an AL affiliate over the next seven games counting today.
CLEAR SKY-LER: Super utility man Skyler Stromsmoe is 4-for-7 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored after sitting out Friday night's game at Erie...The 26-year-old was hit by Altoona's Tim Alderson in his first at-bat on 6/20 and proceeded to go 0-for-12 with five strikeouts prior to the day off.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 100 double plays in 76 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Richmond improved to 3-28 when trailing after five innings with yesterday's 5-4, come-from-behind win over Erie...The Flying Squirrels have won each of their last two games, trailing after five innings in each...Previously the club had lost 28 of 29 games when trailing after five frames.
