Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Altoona Curve bullpen had a six-run meltdown in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Binghamton Mets (AA - New York Mets) who were down 6-1 headed into their final inning used a six-run rally against Diego Moreno and Jeff Sues to come back and take game one of the series, 7-6 on Monday evening at NYSEG Stadium.
The Altoona Curve (49-27) wasted the best performance of right-hander Bryan Morris' Double-A career. Morris hurled a total of seven innings of one-run, three-hit baseball but did not factor in the decision.
Three runs scored by the Curve in the second inning were highlighted by a Chase d'Arnaud two-run triple put Altoona 3-0. In the third, Matt Hague blasted his sixth home run of the season to give Altoona a comfortable 5-0 edge.
Binghamton would chip away with a run in the fifth before Altoona countered with another insurance run in the top of the seventh. Jordy Mercer, who finished the night 3-for-5, would single home Josh Harrison to put Altoona ahead 6-1.
In the ninth, Moreno came on looking to shut down the B-Mets, who had just three hits the entire game. Moreno immediately walked Luis Hernandez. A base hit by Marshall Hubbard preceded a three-run homer by Sean Ratliff which drew Binghamton within two runs at 6-4.
Moreno would permit another walk and hit to put two runners aboard before Sues appeared. Sues would strike out the first batter he faced before allowing Jose Coronado's RBI single to bring the B-Mets within one.
A few batters later, Hernandez, who led off the inning, came to the plate with the bases loaded, belted a two-run double to left center field to win the game.
The Curve will look to regroup and grab the second game of the three-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Eastern League wins leader Jared Hughes (10-3, 3.83) will toe the rubber for the Altoona Curve while LHP Eric Niesen (3-3, 2.66) goes for the B-Mets. Pre-game radio coverage will begin at 6:05 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates.
