New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Carlos Gutierrez struggled with control out of the gates against Trenton and the Thunder pounded out 15 hits en route to an 8-2 victory over the Rock Cats before a crowd that included 162 dogs in attendance for the annual Bark in the Park at New Britain Stadium.
Gutierrez (3-6) walked the first batter he faced, Daniel Brewer before allowing a single to Austin Krum and then fired a wild pitch with Austin Romine at the plate that moved both runners into scoring position. Romine then grounded out to first to score Brewer from third for the first run of the game. Gutierrez escaped any more damage by forcing back-to-back groundouts to end the inning.
Joe Benson tied the game with a two-out solo homer off D.J. Mitchell over the center field wall in the bottom of the inning. It was Benson's team-leading 10th home run and 14th overall this season.
The wheels fell off for Gutierrez and the Rock Cats in the top of the second. Gutierrez forced the leadoff batter to pop out to shortstop Chris Cates before he walked Kevin Smith. Luis Nunez followed by smashing a line drive into left that rolled under the third baseline fence for a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third. Justin Snyder followed with a single that scored Smith to put the Thunder back on top, 2-1. With Brewer at bat, Gutierrez unleashed another wild pitch that allowed Snyder to move into scoring position. Brewer then lined a double into left to plate two runs. Gutierrez threw another wild pitch with Krum at the plate that moved Brewer to third. Krum then hit a shot back to Gutierrez, who made a nice play but misfired to first as the ball sailed into the stands, allowing Brewer to score the fourth run of the inning.
Brewer (3 RBI) and Nunez (2 doubles) finished with three hits and two runs apiece for the Thunder.
The Rock Cats scored again in the fifth when Juan Portes drew a one-out walk, moved to second on Mark Dolenc's single, and came around to score on Ben Revere's bases loaded force out to second.
Mitchell (6-3) finished with two runs on two hits and four walks through seven innings. He struck out seven.
