New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH - Darin Mastroianni went 3-for-5 with a double, two singles, a run, an RBI and his Eastern League-leading 29th stolen base, but the Reading Phillies scored seven runs in the top of the first inning en route to an 8-3 triumph over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Monday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Reading (36-39) knocked Ronald Uviedo out of the box after one-third of an inning. After walking Michael Spidale (1-for-4, BB, SB, R) with one down, Uviedo yielded three straight RBI doubles to Neil Sellers, Matt Rizzoti (1-for-5, 2B, RBI, R) and Kevin Mahar (2-for-3, 2 BB, RBI, R). Uviedo's throwing error allowed the Phillies' fourth run to score; two more unearned runs came across on Jonathan Jaspe's fielding error for a 6-0 lead and Quintin Berry's RBI single off Vince Bongiovanni completed the seven-run stanza.
Four of the seven runs charged to Uviedo (2-3) were earned on four hits and a walk, with one strikeout.
The Phillies (36-39) made it 8-0 in the top of the second when Sellers (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, R), who entered the game 0-for-11 on the season, tagged Bongiovanni's 3-1 pitch over the wall in center for his first homer of the season.
Bongiovanni bounced back to pitch a season-high 4.2 innings, allowing only one run on two hits. The right-hander notched four strikeouts and walked two.
Making his first start of the year, one-time Fisher Cat Ty Taubenheim (3-1) defeated New Hampshire for the second time this season after allowing one run on five hits in five innings. The righty tallied six strikeouts and walked one.
The Fisher Cats (46-31) plated their first run in the bottom of the third when Mastroianni (3-for-5, 2B, RBI, R, SB) doubled and scored when Eric Thames (1-for-4, RBI) singled, driving in his team-leading 54th run of the year.
Mastroianni knocked in the Fisher Cats' second run with a bases-loaded single off reliever Tyson Brummett in the seventh that trimmed Reading's lead to 8-2. Manny Mayorson (1-for-4, RBI) followed with a run-scoring fielder's choice to make it an 8-3 game, but Jason Anderson entered the game and proceeded to strike out Thames and Shawn Bowman (1-for-4) on six consecutive pitches to end the inning.
Anderson went 2.2 perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts, as Reading took the opener of the three-game series. New Hampshire's defeat, coupled with Trenton's victory over New Britain, drops the Fisher Cats one game behind the Thunder in the Eastern Division standings.
On Tuesday night, New Hampshire sends right-hander Kyle Drabek (7-7, 3.26) to the mound against Reading right-hander Vance Worley (5-4, 3.66) in a 7:05pm game. Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy and Bob Lipman.
The first 1,000 fans at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday night will receive a free Fisher Cats Logo Baseball, courtesy of Mt. Washington Assurance. Tuesday is a KRAFT Singles ® Tuesday Night Tickets Night. Fans can bring their KRAFT Singles wrappers to the Merchantsauto.com Stadium ticket office, and buy one ticket to get one free.
