Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending June 27th:

Reading Phillies first baseman Matt Rizzotti has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending June 27th. The 6'5", 235 lb. slugger had an amazing week for the R-Phils, batting .696 (16-for-23) with two doubles, one home run, four runs scored, three RBI, one walk and a .913 slugging percentage over seven games. The 24-year old had multiple hits in all six games he played in last week, including going 3-for-4 with a home run in an 8-3 win over the Bowie Baysox at FirstEnergy Stadium on Wednesday night. Rizzotti, who is a native of Floral Park, New York, ranked first among all Eastern League players in batting average (.696), hits (16), total bases (21), on-base percentage (.708) and OPS (1.621) last week. Rizzotti is hitting .385 with 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 34 RBI in 41 games with the R-Phils this season. He would currently rank first in the league in batting average, slugging percentage (.692) and OPS (1.132) if he had enough at bats to qualify. Matt, who joined the R-Phils on May 13th after hitting .358 with eight doubles and 18 runs scored in 31 games for the Clearwater Threshers, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 2007 draft after hitting .352 with 11 home runs during his junior season at Manhattan College.

Zach Britton, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 27th. The 22-year old started one game for the Baysox last week and posted a record of 1-0 with nine strikeouts and a 1.13 ERA. Britton, who is a native of Panorama City, California, made his lone appearance of the week on Friday night at Altoona and improved his record to 7-3 on the season by pitching eight strong innings in Bowie's 5-1 victory over the Curve. He struck out nine batters and walked just one while surrendering one run on four hits. The 6'3", 195 lb. southpaw, who entered the season rated by Baseball America as the third best prospect in the Orioles organization, has appeared in 15 games for the Baysox this season and has posted a 2.48 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 87 innings pitched. He is currently ranked fourth in the league in ERA, tied for fourth in wins and tied for seventh in strikeouts and was recently named to the US Team for the 2010 Futures Game in Anaheim. Zach, who was the 2009 Carolina League Pitcher of the Year after going 9-6 with 131 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA in 25 games with the Frederick Keys, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the third round of the 2006 draft out of Weatherford High School in Texas.
