Peoria Rivermen News Release
Alec Richards stopped 34 of 35 Peoria Rivermen shots as the Rockford IceHogs topped the Rivermen 2-1 on Wednesday night at the Rockford MetroCentre. T.J. Hensick extended his point streak to 11 games while Graham Mink netted his 14th goal of the year with only 2 seconds remaining in the game.
With the loss, Peoria (31-19-2-3, 67 pts) remains in a tie for second place in the West Division with the Milwaukee Admirals, just one point back of the Houston Aeros.
Rockford opened the scoring nearly halfway through the first period. As Peoria was whistled for back-to-back penalties, Jeff Taffe blasted a slapshot off a body in front and through the legs of Ben Bishop for his team leading 17th goal of the season at 7:02. Ben Smith recorded the lone assist on the power-play goal.
Rockford's Evan Brophey added an insurance tally by scoring the lone goal of the second period at 16:29. Brian Connelly sent a pass ahead to Brophey on the right side while the Rivermen were amidst a line change. Brophey came in and wristed a shot under the blocker of Bishop for his seventh of the year.
With just two ticks on the clock in the third period, Mink spoiled the shutout for Richards by scoring on a scrum in front of the Rockford net. It was a 6-on-4 power-play goal as Bishop had already been pulled for the extra attacker. Hensick and Nathan Oystrick were credited for with the assists.
Both teams went 1-for-7 on the man advantage while the Rivermen outshot the IceHogs 35-27.
Peoria is now 4-2-0-1 against the IceHogs overall and 1-2-0-0 against Rockford at the MetroCentre this season.
The Rivermen will host the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call the Rivermen office at (309) 676-1040 or visit www.rivermen.net.
