Worcester Sharks News Release

ROCHESTER, NY - The Sharks led on three different occasions but Rochester came barreling back each time as Worcester fell 6-4 to the Americans on Wednesday evening in their first ever visit to the Blue Cross Arena. The loss snapped the Sharks season high five game win streak and six game point streak (5-0-0-1).

T.J. Trevelyan scored three points (2-1-3) in his return to the Sharks lineup and Daren Machesney made 18 saves in net in his second straight start for Worcester in the loss. It was only the 4th time in 25 games that the Sharks lost in regulation after scoring the first goal of the game (20-4-0-1).

The Sharks came out buzzing in the opening period and struck first at 7:04 after a turnover in the Rochester zone. Brandon Mashinter extended his point streak to four games after he stole a pass deep in the Americans zone and found T.J. Trevelyan alone in front of Rochester netminder Tyler Plante. Trevelyan (11th) sent a quick backhander past Plante to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Former Shark P.J. Fenton (3rd) evened the score for Rochester as he took a pass from the point by Clay Wilson and zipped the puck past Daren Machesney from on top of the crease at 15:20. The score was tied 1-1 after twenty minutes of play.

Sean Sullivan (11th) scored his first goal since January 2nd after he found a loose puck at the side of the net on the power play at 6:46 to put the Sharks ahead 2-1. Rochester tied the score again as Michal Repik (9th) scored on a wrap-around attempt on the power play at 9:57. T.J. Trevelyan (12th) struck again with a wrap-around attempt of his own on the backhand to give Worcester a 3-2 lead at 13:25. Just 23 seconds later, Bill Thomas (11th) broke down the right side and fired the puck through the pads of Machesney on a 2-on-1 rush to tie the score at 3-3. The Americans would take their first lead of the game at 16:25 as Jordan Knackstedt (11th) wristed the puck past Machesney on another odd man Rochester rush. The Sharks trailed 4-3 after forty minutes of play.

Worcester controlled the majority of the action in the third period but goaltender Tyler Plante was sharp. Jonathan Cheechoo (15th) broke a personal 11 game goalless drought with a nifty backhand past Plante at 13:58 to tie the score at 4-4. But Rochester struck just 34 seconds later as Chris Taylor sent a laser just under the cross bar from the center slot to put Rochester ahead for good. Hugh Jessiman (4th) added an insurance marker less than a minute later to seal the 3rd straight victory for the Americans.

The 4th place Sharks record falls to 25-19-2-6 with 58 points and to 11-11-1-3 on the road.
