Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA- The Johnstown Chiefs announced today their revised playing schedule for the 2004-2005 season. The revision was necessitated following the termination of memberships in Greensboro and Roanoke by the ECHL Board of Governors.

The Chiefs will open their seventeenth ECHL season on Saturday, October 23rd when they host the Wheeling Nailers. The Chiefs will play their first five and last four regular season games at home with the finale on Saturday, April 9th vs. Atlantic City.

"The schedule is pretty much the same with some minor changes. Seven out of our first ten games are at home. Hopefully we can create the excitement we had a year ago and apply it early this season," said Chiefs Vice-President and General Manager Jim Brazill.

Thirty-five of the Chiefs thirty-six home games will be played on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday with the lone week night game coming on Wednesday, November 24th, the day before Thanksgiving.

The Chiefs will play ten out of division games this season compared to three in 2003-2004. Three teams will make their first ever appearance at the War Memorial this season as the Bakersfield Condors (1/8/05), Fresno Falcons (1/1/05), and San Diego Gulls (2/5/05) all visit. The Long Beach Ice Dogs will also come to Johnstown on Saturday, November 27th. The Chiefs faced the Ice Dogs once last season (10/18/03) with Johnstown coming away with a 4-1 win.

The Chiefs will make a four game road trip to South Carolina in January when they visit the South Carolina Stingrays on the 18th , the Charlotte Checkers on the 20th, the Pee Dee Pride on the 22nd and wrapping up in Charleston against the Stingrays on the 23rd. The Chiefs and Stingrays have not faced one another since December 20, 1996.

Friday and Saturday night home games will begin at 7:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon games will begin at 3:00 p.m. Due to the Super Bowl, the game time of the Sunday, February 6th game vs. Peoria will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24th vs. Trenton will begin at 8:00 p.m. and New Years Eve vs. Toledo will be at 6:00 p.m.

The ECHL also revised the division alignment for 2004-05 with Augusta moving from the South Division to the East Division in the American Conference. The Kelly Cup Playoffs format will remain the same.

American Conference East - Augusta, Charlotte, Columbia, Greenville, Pee Dee and South Carolina

American Conference South - Florida, Gwinnett, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pensacola and Texas

National Conference North - Atlantic City, Dayton, Johnstown, Peoria, Reading, Toledo, Trenton and Wheeling

National Conference West - Alaska, Bakersfield, Fresno, Idaho, Las Vegas, Long Beach, San Diego and Victoria

The ECHL will have 28 teams in 16 states and one province in Canada playing 1,008 games in 2004-05. The league welcomes its first team in Canada in 2004-05 with the addition of Victoria, British Columbia. Beginning on October 22 and concluding on April 9, 2005, each of the teams will play a 72-game schedule comprised of 36 home and 36 road games. The ECHL opens at a later date in 2004-05 as a result of the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, which are scheduled to open later because of the World Cup of Hockey. The Premier "AA" Hockey League, the ECHL had affiliation agreements with 21 of the 30 teams in the NHL and 21 of the 28 teams in the AHL in 2003-04.

Season ticket packages and flex plans are now available by calling the Chiefs office at (814) 539-1799 or 1-800-SLAPSHOT.
