Revenge on the River, Cats Fall to 51s 9-3

Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - The River Cats took an early lead but could not silence the 51s as Las Vegas scored nine runs on the night to take game three of the series 9-3. A late home run from Jarrett Parker was far too little too late for the home team.

Just one night after piling up 21 hits in a 12-2 drubbing of the 51s, the River Cats seemed to pick up where they left off, as three of the first four batters reached base. Grant Green knocked in his sixth run of the season, singling home Ryan Lollis to put the Cats on the board 1-0. Later in the inning, Miguel Olivo made it 2-0 with an RBI-single of his own. The duo are tied for the team lead with six RBI apiece.

Las Vegas stayed in the game, however, thanks in part to a strong effort by lefty starter Duane Below. The New York Mets affiliate picked up runs in the second and fourth innings to draw even at two before breaking it open in the fifth.

The nightmare in the fifth began with a long Matt Reynolds home run to left center field, and things would unravel further from there. Sacramento starter Matt Lujan would walk the following batter before giving way to Braulio Lara out of the River Cats bullpen. The 51s would add three more runs in the frame to open up a 6-2 lead.

The 51s were not done, however, doing more damage to Lara in the sixth. Las Vegas pounded out 12 hits on the night to hand the River Cats pitchers a season high for hits allowed. Dunning continued to look sharp, tossing 2 1/3 solid innings.

The Sacramento relief corps has suffered a handful of bittersweet departures in the early going this season. The trio of Derek Law, Michael Broadway, and Steven Okert has been recalled by San Francisco in the past five days. While these promotions are something to be celebrated, the talented arms are certainly missed in Sacramento.

Reynolds led the way for Las Vegas, going 3-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Catcher Rene Rivera also pitched in with two hits and three RBI. Parker was the story for the home side, launching his first home run of the young season in the sixth. The powerful right fielder has struggled to start the year, hitting just .152 in 46 at bats.

The River Cats will look to right the ship tomorrow night as they face off against the 51s once again in game three of their four game set. Sacramento will send righty Albert Suarez (0-2, 5.14) to the mound for his first start of 2016. Las Vegas will counter with right-hander Gabriel Ynoa (0-0, 2.38). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on ESPN 1320.
