Reign Falls To Grizzlies In OT, 7-6

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, fell to the Utah Grizzlies in overtime, 7-6, on Wednesday evening before a crowd of 2,324 at The E-Center. After being down 5-0 after the first period, the Reign scored three goals in the second and three more in the third period (the last only 48 seconds before the clock hit zero) to force an overtime session. Forward Greg Hogeboom recorded his second hat trick of the season with his goals in the match. Defenseman David Walker picked up three assists and center Tim Kraus (1g, 2a) and left wing Peter Lenes (2g, 1a) had three points each. Reign goaltender Mike Zacharias made ten saves on 13 shots before he was pulled at 9:09 to be replaced with Curtis Darling for the remainder of the game.

The Grizzlies claimed the first goal of the night (as well as the first five goals of the match) for the fifth consecutive game. Defenseman Matt Clarke recorded his first professional goal at 2:57 with assists from fellow defenseman Vic Bartley and left wing Evan Kotsopoulos.

Center Brett Parnham extended the Grizzlies lead to two goals at 6:35 during a Utah power play, with assists from left wings Ryan Kinasewich and AJ Perry. Left wing Dylan Hunter claimed the next two Utah goals, one an uncontested backhander into the top corner of the net at 9:09 that prompted Reign head coach Karl Taylor to make a goaltender change and replace Mike Zacharias with Curtis Darling between the pipes. Hunter's second goal of the night was a redirect of a shot on goal from Ryan Kinasewich, who claimed his third assist of the game on the play. Forward Tom May closed out scoring in the first period when he grabbed the rebound from right wing Shea Guthrie's shot that bounced off of Curtis Darling's pads and threw it into the net, giving the Grizzlies an early 5-0 lead.

Tim Kraus scored the first Reign goal of the game at 6:32 in the second period with assists from defensemen Andrew Martens and David Walker, and marked the only Ontario power play goal of the night. Peter Lenes scored the second unanswered goal for the Reign at 8:57. Although officials initially waved the goal off for being kicked in, they gave the play the okay and Lenes cut the Grizzlies lead to 5-2.

Greg Hogeboom was awarded a penalty shot when he was hooked less than a minute later at 9:52, and Utah netminder Mitch O'Keefe was unable to make the save. Hogeboom's goal on his penalty shot brought the Reign within two points of Utah.

The Grizzlies finally answered back just 12 seconds later, when Vic Bartley scored his first goal and second point of the night with assists from Brett Parnham and right wing Vlady Nikiforov.

The Grizzlies managed to hold on to their 6-3 lead over Ontario until only 2:31 remained in regulation. Fresh from a time-out on the bench and with Curtis Darling pulled from the crease for the extra attacker, Peter Lenes lit up the scoreboard with his second goal of the game, making the score 6-4 Utah. Darling returned to his crease after Lenes' goal. Only ten seconds later, and immediately following the puck drop at center ice, Greg Hogeboom brought the Reign within one goal of the Grizzlies with assists from Peter Lenes and Tim Kraus (who both claimed their third points of the game on the play).

With 48 seconds remaining on the clock, Greg Hogeboom struck again, scoring the equalizer for the Reign and claiming his second hat trick of the season. Neither team scored again for the remainder of regulation, so the clubs geared up for a 4-on-4 overtime session to determine a game winner.

After the Reign came back from a 5-0 deficit in the opening period, the Grizzlies claimed the win and two standings points with a goal from defenseman Tim Maxwell 3:08 into the overtime period. The final score was Grizzlies 7, Reign 6 (OT).
