Ontario Reign News Release
LOVELAND, CO- The Ontario Reign (33-16-4-2), proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, earned a point in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Colorado Eagles (30-19-1-5) in front of a crowd of 5,289 at the Budweiser Events Center.
The Reign earned an early lead with Bill Bagron's 18th goal of the season merely 35 seconds into regulation. This gave Bagron the league lead for first goals with eight. Jason Fredricks picked up the assist. At 12:38 Geoff Irwin picked up the puck from Alan Mazur and Derek Couture, and sent a long shot past Kyle Jones through Colorado traffic.
The second frame had only one tally on the board. Colorado's Alex Penner managed to knock in Aaron Schneekloth's rebound behind Chris Carrozzi bringing the Reign's lead to just one goal. Kyle Peto also picked up an assist on the play. Carrozzi made a great save on Chad Costello's breakaway opportunity, denying the Eagles' point-leader halfway through the period.
Colorado came strong on the offense scoring three unanswered goals on Carrozzi in the third period alone. The Eagles' Kevin Ulanski sent a hard shot from the blueline through the Reign defense, tying the game 2-2. About two minutes later, Joey Sides gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest when he scored off Ulanski's rebound shot. Colorado scored their third goal in three minutes when Aaron Slattengren, with help from Michael Forney and Peto, gave the Eagles a two-goal lead at 5:41.
Bagron got the Reign momentum going with a power-play goal at the 9:30 mark. Firing a solid pass to the forward, Mazur picked up his second assist of the night. Everett Sheen lit the lamp with the equalizer when he picked up the puck from Kyle Kraemer's wraparound attempt and shot it past Jones at 14:05. Chris Huxley also recorded an assist on the goal. Regulation ended sending the teams into an extra frame.
A tripping penalty was called against the Reign giving Colorado a man advantage. One minute later, at the 2:30 mark, Ulanski sent a centering pass to Chad Costello, who quickly moved it to the left circle where Schneekloth sent a hard shot past Carrozzi's left side ending the game 5-4.
Carrozzi took the overtime loss stopping 28 of 35 shots, Jones earns the win saving 21 of 24 shots.
