Wheeling Nailers News Release
TOLEDO, OH- Paul Crowder netted a pair of special teams goals in the first period on Saturday night, and his teammates continued that offensive success as the contest progressed. Thanks to two more goals in the game, as well as 22 saves by Peter Delmas, the Wheeling Nailers were able to secure their second straight victory over the Toledo Walleye, winning 4-1 at Huntington Center.
The Nailers got off to a strong start in the opening period of play, thanks to a pair of special teams goals scored by Paul Crowder. At the 6:42 mark of the first, Toledo goaltender Alec Richards tossed the puck around the boards, only to find Crowder, who slammed in the shorthanded tally. Less than seven minutes later, Crowder connected once again, as he deflected Andrew Hotham's shot into the back of the cage for a power play goal. The Walleye got one goal back later in the frame, as Kyle Rogers knocked in a loose puck off a feed from Joey Martin on the left side of the crease.
Wheeling added to the lead in the second period, as they lit the lamp twice. The first tally came at the 6:38 mark, as Chase Watson took a cross-ice feed from Chris Barton, and snapped a wrist shot into the top corner of the net. 2:34 later, the Nailers netted their fourth goal of the evening, as Kyle Bushee buried a shot on a 3-on-2 rush, along with teammates Chase Watson and Ben Farrer, who both picked up assists on the marker.
Neither team was able to change the score in the third period, as the Nailers coasted to a 4-1 victory, sweeping the two-game set with Toledo, and clinching a win in the season series.
Peter Delmas earned the win in goal for Wheeling, as he stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced. Alec Richards took the loss for Toledo, as he made 22 saves on 26 shots.
The Nailers will conclude their weekend on Sunday, with a 4:00 face-off against the Kalamazoo Wings at Wings Stadium.
