Atlanta Gladiators News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - A Maxime Lacroix hat trick lifted the South Carolina Stingrays to a 5-2 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday night at North Charleston Coliseum. Gwinnett (30-15-7-4) remains in first in the South Division and Eastern Conference, while the Rays (30-22-3-1) remain in third.
South Carolina finished 3-for-9 on the power play while Gwinnett went 2-for-7 in a penalty-filled contest, and the first period certainly saw a steady stream of Gladiators to the box.
Gwinnett took five penalties to just one on the Rays in the opening stanza and South Carolina capitalized. Lacroix cashed in on the man advantage to make it a 1-0 game at 14:34, and Trent Campbell added a shorthanded marker at 18:32 to put the Stingrays up 2-0 at the end of 20 minutes.
South Carolina built up their lead to 4-0 in the second period, as Lacroix potted two more goals at 2:00 and 10:17 to cap a hat trick. The Gladiators answered right back however, starting with a Tyler Murovich power play goal at 12:36 as he jammed in a loose puck in the low slot. Bryan Brutlag and Justin Milo tacked on the assists.
Milo added another power play goal at 17:40 to cut the deficit back to two. Brutlag and Paul Flache assisted as the Gladiators bombarded Rays goaltender Philipp Grubauer with a series of chances before Milo finally snuck a shot passed him through traffic from the bottom of the far circle. Gwinnett trailed 4-2 heading to the third.
Prior to the second period Gwinnett had been 0-for-their last-34 on the man advantage against the Rays. They went 2-for-5 in the second.
Despite the late rally Gwinnett was unable to mount much of a comeback in the third, and the only goal of the frame came on a Rays power play at 8:57 off the stick of former Gladiator Chris Higgins.
Joe Palmer suffered the loss stopping 24 shots, while Philipp Grubauer made 25 saves for his 20th win of the season.
Both teams meet again Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at North Charleston Coliseum.
