Ontario Reign News Release
San Antonio, TX - The Ontario Reign (33-14-3-1) dominated the San Antonio Rampage (24-28-8-0) Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 victory at AT&T Center.
The Reign needed only 10 seconds to start the game scoring as forward Justin Auger found forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas off the opening faceoff. Forward Sean Backman made it a two-goal advantage at 13:04, banking a shot off the back of Rampage netminder Roman Will (L, three saves on six shots) and across the goal line. Forward Ryan Horvat picked up the lone assist. Late in the frame, forward Nic Dowd made it 3-0 from Horvat at 16:46. The Reign scored three goals on six shots in the first period.
In the second frame, forward Michael Mersch added to the Reign scoresheet with his team-leading 20th goal of the season at 7:16 from defenseman Kurtis MacDermid and Backman.
With Rampage forward Daniel Maggio serving a five-minute major penalty for fighting as well as a game-misconduct and instigating infraction on a hit to MacDermid, the Reign capitalized on the power-power play as defenseman Vincent LoVerde blasted in his ninth goal of the season at 6:09 of the third period from defenseman Jeff Schultz and forward Kris Newbury. The Rampage spoiled goaltender Peter Budaj's (27 saves on 28 shots) shutout bid with less than four minutes to play as defenseman Cody Corbett grabbed his second goal of the season at 16:37. The Reign finished the contest 1-for-4 on the power play while the Rampage went 0-for-6.
