Syracuse Crunch News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Five Syracuse Crunch players recorded a multi-point game as the team prevailed over the Springfield Falcons, 6-3, tonight at the MassMutual Center.
Mike Blunden contributed two goals and a helper in his sixth multi-goal game of the season. Anthony DeAngelo, Tanner Richard and Tye McGinn all recorded a goal and two assists, while Matthew Peca added two assists. The victory pushes the Crunch to 24-23-9-3 on the season and 2-1 in the four-game series with the Falcons. The Falcons were handed their fourth consecutive loss and drop to 21-30-3-4.
Crunch goaltender Adam Wilcox earned his third win in four straight starts, turning aside 32 of 35 shots on goal. His counterpart, Niklas Treutle, stopped 27-of-32 in defeat. Syracuse special teams played a major role, going 3-for-8 on the power play and successfully shutting down 6-of-7 Springfield man-advantages.
The Falcons were first on the board just 3:31 into the contest. During a 5-on-3 advantage, Brendan Shinnimin snuck one under the crossbar from the bottom of the right circle. Alex Grant and Philip Samuelsson grabbed points for the assists. The Crunch evened the score halfway through the frame. Peca skated down the left wing side, pulled the puck right around a defender and sent a feed to the left goal post for Joel Vermin to jam home. McGinn recorded the secondary assist.
Springfield took back the lead before the first period came to a close. At 15:47, Michael Bunting redirected Dylan Reese's shot from the right point for his eighth of the season. Laurent Dauphin had the secondary helper on the go-ahead tally.
At the 9:14 mark of the middle frame, the Crunch came back to tie the game for a second time. After a series of quick passes from DeAngelo and Richard, Blunden one-timed a rocket past Treutle from the high slot to knot the teams, 2-2.
The Crunch finally took over the lead early in the third period. At 4:29, McGinn received the puck from Peca, skated around the back of the cage and circled back up to the top before passing down for DeAngelo to net one from the left circle.
The game was evened for the third time one minute later when Craig Cunningham backhanded a second chance opportunity past Wilcox.
Syracuse went on to score three unanswered goals to secure a 6-3 victory over Springfield. At 10:06, Richard powered a wrist shot off a cross-slot pass from Blunden and a secondary assist by DeAngelo. The Crunch went up by two on the power play with 3:03 remaining in the game. After Richard missed the net wide, Yanni Gourde won a battle at the end boards and chipped the puck out for Blunden to push into an unguarded net. McGinn wrapped up scoring with an empty net power-play goal with the help of Dylan Blujus and Luke Witkowski.
The Crunch return to the War Memorial Arena to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m.
