ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Bakersfield Condors, 7-5, before 9,136 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena Wednesday night.
Aaron Lewadniuk scored the game's first goal at the two-minute mark of the first period. C.J. Stretch blocked a Bakersfield clearing attempt, fed the puck through the slot to Justin Taylor, who fed it back across to Lewadniuk for the one-timer past the outstretched mitt of Jim Watt. Jean-Marc Beaudoin evened up the score at one for the Condors with a goal at 11:33.
Stephane Goulet gave the Condors a 2-1 lead at 3:51 of the second period, but Brett O'Malley and Shawn Germain tallied goals 51 seconds apart to put the Reign ahead, 3-2. O'Malley tipped David Walker's slap shot into the net at 13:42 to tie the game at two. Michael Pelech also assisted on the play. With Bakersfield on a power play, Jordan Morrison scooped up a loose puck at center ice and put the puck on the stick of Germain, who skated in all alone and beat Watt cleanly at 14:33. The short-handed goal put Ontario up, 3-2. Justin Taylor extended the Reign lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal at 18:46, as he hammered home a rebound at 18:46.
Alex Bourret was hooked on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot at 6:22 of the third period. He skated in on net from the right circle, faked a move to the far side of the net which got Watt moving in that direction, and lifted the puck into the net on the short side to give Ontario a 5-2 advantage. Erick Lizon cut the Reign lead to 5-3 at 11:42, but Morrison re-established a three-goal lead for the Reign at 11:59. Bakersfield's added goals by Beaudoin and Bobby Robins and O'Malley scored his second goal of the game, as the Reign beat the Condors by a final score of 7-5.
Beau Erickson stopped 29 shots for his 10th win of the season, while Watt stopped 32 in the loss.
Three stars:
1) ONT - Brett O'Malley
2) ONT - Alex Bourret
3) BAK - Jean-Marc Beaudoin
