Alaska Races Back to Beat Victoria 4-2

A group of former British Columbia residents and Victoria players led the Alaska Aces to four unanswered goals in a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Victoria Salmon Kings at Save on Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday evening. Alaska won their seventh straight game, and their 13th win in the last 14 games. Alaska's record improved to 46-21-3 on the year, and they reduced their magic number to clinch the Brabham Cup regular season title to one point. The Aces can clinch the regular season title with one more point or a Greenville loss. Greenville is in action on Thursday night against Gwinnett. The Aces will close the regular season with two more games in Victoria on Friday and Saturday night, before returning home in mid-April for Games 1 & 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The Aces came out sluggish, and fell behind 2-0 early in the contest. Goals from Adam Taylor at 5:46 of Chad Painchaud at 8:21 gave the Salmon Kings an early two-goal lead. But the Aces began to chip away, and turn the tide. Abbotsford, British Columbia product Mark Isherwood blasted home his 15th goal of the season at 13:00 on a delayed Victoria power play. Then former Kings forward Scott Howes stole the puck and fed fellow Former King, Wes Goldie in front of the net for Goldie's league-leading, 44th goal of the season at 16:51 to tie the game 2-2.
The Aces and Salmon Kings went a long stretch without a whistle to erase the first half of the second period, but Victoria goaltender David Shantz had to come out of the game at 10:22 after over-extending for a save. Jimmy Spratt entered the game in relief. The Aces took their first lead when Surrey, British Columbia native, Curtis Fraser scored at 13:30 on a power play to make it 3-2.
Alaska added an insurance goal when Richmond, BC product, Ethan Cox scored at 13:43 of the final period. The Aces held on for the 4-2 win, outshooting Victoria 8-2 in the final period.
Adam Courchaine (17-7-1) earned the win, making 21 saves on 23 shots. Jimmy Spratt (7-4-1) suffered the loss, making 10 saves on 12 shots in relief. Shantz also stopped 10 of 12 in the start, but did not figure into the decision. The Aces went 1-6 on the power play, while the Salmon Kings went 0-2. The Aces outshot the Kings 24-23 in the game.
The Aces will close the regular season with two more games in Victoria on Friday and Saturday, before returning home in mid-April for Games 1 & 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals and the debut of the 2011 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
