Jackals' Comeback Bid Denied by Devils, 5-4

Trenton, N.J.. - The Elmira Jackals (32-28-7-3) staged a three-goal comeback on Wednesday night but dropped a 5-4 decision to the Trenton Devils (26-36-2-6) at the Sun National Bank Center. The Jackals scored their league-leading 17th and 18th short-handed goals of the season in the loss.

Jeff Prough finished off a passing play involving J.S. Berube and Ryan Hayes on the end boards by driving in a puck from the slot to put Trenton up 1-0 at 6:02 of the first period.

Tony Zancanaro knocked in a rebound at 6:26 of the second period off of a shot from Chris Berengeur to give Trenton a 2-0 lead.

Matt Germain stole a puck at the Elmira blue line and fired in a puck past the glove of Marco Cousineau at 7:08 of the middle frame to extend the Devils' lead to 3-0.

Yannick Tifu rifled in a puck at 15:15 of the second period on a feed from Corey Cowick in the slot to give the Jackals their first goal of the game, 3-1.

In the third period, Drew Paris stickhandled in from the slot to the right circle and wristed a puck past Lerg's stick with the Jackals short handed to make it 3-2 at 3:58.

Tifu scored his second goal of the game and league-leading sixth short-handed goal of the season with a wrist shot from Trenton goaltender Jeff Lerg's left at 7:02 of the third to tie the game, 3-3.

The Devils answered right back to take the lead for good when Dave Leaderer's shot from the left circle deflected past Cousineau to give Trenton a 4-3 advantage at 8:04.

Ryan Hayes lofted a shot from the low slot over Cousineau and into the net at 13:22 of the final period to pad the Devils' lead to 5-3.

Eric Regan snapped a backdoor feed from A.J. Perry into the goal with under 10 seconds left in the third period to make it 5-4, but the Devils held off the Jackals for the win.

Cousineau made 30 saves on 35 shots as he fell to 21-16-4-1. Lerg improved to 12-12-0-1 by making 17 saves on 21 shots.

The Jackals were unable to clinch a playoff spot in the loss. Elmira can seal a spot in the playoffs on Friday by defeating Toledo. The Jackals can also clinch a spot if the Walleye lose in regulation in any of their final three games.

Elmira and Toledo battle on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Huntington Center.
