Trenton, N.J.. - The Elmira Jackals (32-28-7-3) staged a three-goal comeback on Wednesday night but dropped a 5-4 decision to the Trenton Devils (26-36-2-6) at the Sun National Bank Center. The Jackals scored their league-leading 17th and 18th short-handed goals of the season in the loss.
Jeff Prough finished off a passing play involving J.S. Berube and Ryan Hayes on the end boards by driving in a puck from the slot to put Trenton up 1-0 at 6:02 of the first period.
Tony Zancanaro knocked in a rebound at 6:26 of the second period off of a shot from Chris Berengeur to give Trenton a 2-0 lead.
Matt Germain stole a puck at the Elmira blue line and fired in a puck past the glove of Marco Cousineau at 7:08 of the middle frame to extend the Devils' lead to 3-0.
Yannick Tifu rifled in a puck at 15:15 of the second period on a feed from Corey Cowick in the slot to give the Jackals their first goal of the game, 3-1.
In the third period, Drew Paris stickhandled in from the slot to the right circle and wristed a puck past Lerg's stick with the Jackals short handed to make it 3-2 at 3:58.
Tifu scored his second goal of the game and league-leading sixth short-handed goal of the season with a wrist shot from Trenton goaltender Jeff Lerg's left at 7:02 of the third to tie the game, 3-3.
The Devils answered right back to take the lead for good when Dave Leaderer's shot from the left circle deflected past Cousineau to give Trenton a 4-3 advantage at 8:04.
Ryan Hayes lofted a shot from the low slot over Cousineau and into the net at 13:22 of the final period to pad the Devils' lead to 5-3.
Eric Regan snapped a backdoor feed from A.J. Perry into the goal with under 10 seconds left in the third period to make it 5-4, but the Devils held off the Jackals for the win.
