Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT - Tyler Sandhu scored three times for his second career hat trick and the Everett Silvertips held a pair of two-goal leads before the Regina Pats came back to steal a 6-5 overtime victory Wednesday night at Comcast Arena. Despite the overtime defeat, the 'Tips recorded at least one point for the sixth straight game heading into their first matchup of the year with the defending WHL Champion and division rival Portland Winterhawks at Comcast Arena.
The three-goal outing was the second of Sandhu's career, helping the 'Tips build leads of 3-1 in the second period and 5-3 in the third. Josh Winquist assisted on three of Everett's goals, with Matt Pufahl and Carson Stadnyk also finding the back of the net for the Silvertips. The road team has now won nine of 11 all-time meetings between Everett and Regina.
Everett outshot Regina 7-6 in the first, but the Pats got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead. The Silvertips got two early powerplay opportunities, but weren't able to capitalize and take the lead. Midway through the period, Dryden Hunt picked up a rebound in front and flipped it on his backhand into the open side of Daniel Cotton's net.
The Silvertips surged ahead with three unanswered goals early in the second period, starting 24 seconds in when an initial shot by Josh Winquist was stopped before Tyler Sandhu came around the back of the net and tapped it in to tie the game at one. Everett found itself on a 5-on-3 powerplay just over a minute later, leading to Matt Pufahl's goal on a one-timer from the right point. The third goal came at 5:03 after a Noah Juulsen blast from the point was turned away and Sandhu was there to deposit his second of the night around goaltender Dawson MacAuley to make it 3-1 Silvertips. Regina would come back midway through the second however, with two quick goals by Maximillian Kammerer and Boston Leier less than 30 seconds apart tying the game back up at three heading into the final frame.
Four minutes into the third period the Silvertips created a 2-on-1 rush, while Carson Stadnyk wiring a shot off the post and in to give Everett the lead once again. The Silvertips were changing lines just past the 11-minute mark when Jujhar Khaira held the puck in the Pats zone then fed it across the goal mouth, where a crashing Tyler Sandhu stuffed it in to complete the hat trick and put the 'Tips up 5-3. Again Regina would rally however, with Dryden Hunt scoring his second of the night at 14:29 to make it a 5-4 game. Pats defenseman Dmitry Sinitsyn scored a late powerplay goal with a 1:09 left to tie the game at five and force overtime. A turnover at the Silvertips' blue line early in OT led to the winning goal, with Dyson Stevenson batting in a loose puck to give Regina the 6-5 win.
Daniel Cotton (5-1-3-0) finished with 15 saves in the overtime defeat as the Silvertips outshot the Pats 25-21. Dawson MacAuley (12-7-0-0) stopped 20 shots in the win. Everett scored once on four powerplay chances, while Regina converted one of two.
Next up for the Silvertips is a pair of weekend home games Friday and Saturday night at Comcast Arena. The 'Tips battle the division rival Portland Winterhawks for the first time this season Friday at 7:35 on Kevin Constantine bobblehead night. The Prince George Cougars will then visit Everett Saturday at 7:05 pm on Ben Betker magnet night in the last game before the 'Tips depart on next week's Central Division road trip.
