Pats Tip Everett in Overtime

November 14, 2013 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

First Period

The Pats didn't get the start they would have liked, heading to the penalty box twice in the opening minutes of the game. First it was Austin Wagner for interference followed by Griffin Mumby for holding, but the Pats penalty kill was up to the task, killing both opportunities. That would prove important as just over a minute after killing the Mumby penalty, Dryden Hunt grabbed a Dyson Stevenson rebound, flipped to the backhand, and deposited the puck behind goaltender Daniel Cotton. The goal was Hunt's second in as many games after not recording a goal since March 17th, 2012 due to missing all but two games last year. Dawson MacAuley wasn't nearly as busy as Sunday night, but made seven stops to help the Pats to the 1-0 lead after the first period.

Second Period

The middle frame saw the Silvertips explode for three goals in the first five minutes. First Tyler Sandhu fanned on a puck heading to a largely empty Pats goal and MacAuley managed to stop it with his stick on the line, but it skipped back to Sandhu who knocked it in. The Pats got into more penalty trouble when Marc McCoy and Braden Christoffer took penalties on the same shift to put the Blue and White down 5-on-3. The "˜Tips would take advantage when Matt Pufahl ripped a one-timer past MacAuley to take the lead. Everett added to their advantage when Sandhu was on the scene again for a rebound and a 3-1 Everett lead. Just when the Pats looked in danger of getting buried, Maximilian Kammerer came to the rescue when he banked in his first WHL goal off Cotton and into the net. Just 27 seconds later, Morgan Klimchuk, Dyson Stevenson and Boston Leier knifed their way through the Silvertips on their way to a Leier marker and a 3-3 tie. The score would hold that way with the teams heading to the final period tied.

Third Period/Overtime

The Blue and White turned up the head in the early stages of the third period, carrying the play and holding the Silvertips in their own end with an aggressive fore-check. That aggression would come back to bite the Pats though, as Carson Stadnyk broke in on a two-on-one, kept the puck and put a perfect shot to the top corner of the Pats goal. Once again it looked like the Pats would be leaving Everett empty handed, but they would dig deep again. Dryden Hunt got it started, accepting a feed from Connor Gay and breaking around the defenceman. Hunt was knocked to his knees on the play, but still got away a shot and scored to cut the lead to one. With a late powerplay, Dmitry Sinitsyn ripped home his second of the year to tie the game 5-5 with 1:09 left and send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, the Pats put all sorts of pressure on the Silvertips and on a giveaway, Sinitsyn would send the puck off Dyson Stevenson and into the Everett goal to bring the Pats over the bench and celebrate a 6-5 overtime win.
