Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping to complete a sweep of a home and home Western Hockey League series with the Saskatoon Blades when the two teams hit the ice at Westman Communications Group Place.
The Wheat Kings, who are coming off Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Blades in Saskatoon, will be hoping to climb above the .500 mark for the first time since the club's annual west coast road trip last month. Winners of back to back games, Brandon enters Friday night with a record of 11-11-0 and are sitting all alone in eighth place in the WHL's Eastern Conference, two points back of both the Kootenay Ice and Regina Pats.
Friday's game will be Brandon's last home game in over two weeks as the Wheat Kings will hit the road this coming week for stops in Swift Current (Tuesday), Medicine Hat (Wednesday) and Cranbook where they will play the Kootenay Ice on both Friday and Saturday nights, November 22nd and 23rd.
Winners of two of three games against the Wheat Kings this season, Saskatoon enters the weekend with a record of 9-12-1-2 and trail Brandon by one point in the Conference.
Entering the weekend, Brandon's Richard Nejezchleb is on a torrid pace having scored nine goals over the course of his last six games, giving him seventeen on the season which is good enough for a third place tie with Portland's Oliver Bjorkstrand in the WHL.
Saskatoon meanwhile has been led this season by the duo of Nikita Scherbak (12-19-31) and Collin Valcourt (11-19-30). Both are currently among the league scoring leaders, averaging more than a point per game.
Friday night is Team Poster Giveaway Night in Brandon, with the first 2,500 fans in attendance to receive a full colour 2013-14 poster featuring the likes of Nejezchleb, Jayce Hawryluk, the Quenneville brothers and captain Ryan Pulock, courtesy of ROCKY MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT.
Performing the national anthem Friday night will be the 61-member Ecole Harrison Chorale and the hockey club has announced that a Moment of Silence will be observed before the game for longtime executive and part owner Keith McCallum, who passed away last weekend at the age of 75.
Brother of former Wheat King coaching great Dunc, Keith has been a valuable member of the hockey club's family for years. A former team director, he served as the club's secretary treasurer from 1967-74. As well, he was part owner of the WCHL franchise from 1970-74.
Born in Flin Flon, Keith was the father of three (Brent, Jodi and Kellie) and in 2010, he and his wife Gloria celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Tickets to the game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at wheatkings.com.
